The Angel Acres Adoption Program -GFAS Accredited Facility

Angel Acres provides an excellent adoption program that benefits both horse and adopter!

A brief description of our program is below.

A horse, usually a Thoroughbred, is purchased from the kill buyer, a Coggins test is immediately pulled at the sale.

The horse is then transported to a quarantine facility that we use in Maryland,
where he or she is boarded for minimum of 30 days. He or she is then transported to a training facility we have been generously granted use of.

At the training farm each horse receives his or her vetting, shots, teeth exam and floating if needed.

The horse is then visited by our Blacksmith for his or her tootsie check, and then its off to the main farm.

Each horse then receives a minimum 60 days training (usually 90 days) in addition to ground work, and their prior track training, etc.

Our prices average from $1800 to $3500.

Each horse is brought up to date on teeth, feet, shots, deworming, etc.
We run the rescue like a business, we need to be solvent in order to save more horses.

We run an above board, transparent rescue and pride ourselves on our honesty and integrity.

We do not pull horses from the sale and make them available the next day...our program is thorough, we pay attention to detail, pay attention to the horses behavior, handling, riding and other details that help us make a great match for both horse and adopter.

We do NOT deal with broker horses, we feel this blurs the line between horses truly in need of assistance and those horses being sold for a commission to the seller/web site hoster.

We write for grants, hold fundraisers, and have adoption fees, etc.

Additionally, our adoption fees include the price to save another horse from the kill buyer/slaughter house.

The main difference between adopting (with a transfer of ownership in most cases) an Angel Acres rescue horse and purchasing from a horse dealer is that you have our personal guarantee on each and every horse.

We strive to ensure an excellent match between horse and adopter. We also offer after adoption support for the new horse owner.

Please write or call if you have any questions about our program.

The Thoroughbred: Your Next Sport Horse!

Ahhhh....my reply to the most recent Angel Acres email....

Angel Acres believes wholeheartedly that rescue horses CAN have a fantastic second career!

Not all rescue horses are crippled and old with one hoof on a banana peel!

We, Angel Acres, rescue horses that are sound, sane and healthy with tons of potential, and most are pulled from the kill pen. We are working hard to dispel the currently, more often than not, believed myth that "there must be something wrong if he/she was in the kill pen"...usually the reason is they are not fast enough to earn their keep in the racing world.

Take a look at Preston, Tango (shown at left), Cuddles...all were in a heap of trouble i.e. kill pen or on the way there without swift intervention...all sane, sound and extremely ridable! Preston is a 1st level dressage horse, Tango is simply gorgeous and amazing!

Check out Markie on this blog...pulled from the kill pen for $325 now a $30,000+ show horse (with a fantastically wonderful family who loves her to pieces) on the A-Circuit in New Jersey...I could show you example after example.

We (as many of you know) concentrate on OTTB's and we feel that the majority of them can go onto wonderful, fantastic second careers!

So please stop by our site, check out our program page, and help spread the word:

Dolly Girl Finds New Home! YEA!!!

Dolly Girl aka Belle has found her new home with Debbie of Northern Baltimore County, MD!!

YEA!! Debbie has been a reader and supporter of Angel Acres for several years and responded to our email to help find this sweet girl a home...and agreed to take this mare into her heart and barn!

Sooooo...yesterday I get an email from Debbie saying that Dolly is great with one, oh minor problem...she is an equine mud pie! LOL!!

Big Big Big thanks to Bobbi of Monkton for boarding this mare for us, thanks to Fran for harassing me SO much that I finally broke down and called Bobbi and asked for help and a discounted board rate (she said "of course, I'll help you guys out"!) WHEW!! LOL!

Super, big thanks to Joe Renner of Ashlin Sport Horses for helping this mare get to safety and then to her new home. Trailering her in the beginning was not easy, at all...

He went WAY WAY WAY out of his way for this mare, and we so appreciate it! Truly, Joe is a one of a kind guy and we recommend him to ALL of our adopters for all their hauling needs. Amy (Cloud's mom) also assisted the first day too!!!

Alas, Amy is now a foster failure (thanks Cloud for being too dern lovable...argh lol), and we love her for it! LOL!

Soooooo...this is one super duper lucky mare, you can see her original story here -

However...none of this would have been possible without a whole bunch of people stepping up to the plate for her...BIG THANKS FROM THE ENTIRE ANGEL ACRES GANG TO ALL WHO HELPED GET THIS MARE INTO HER NEW HOME!

Watch for tomorrows blog...Bailey Bug's update!

Do You Know Your Rights? Your Donor Rights That is...

I received yet ANOTHER email today starting something like this..."I donated some money to ABC Rescue and never received a note back or anything, but I know they got my donation. I am on a fixed income and have very little to donate, but really want to help (insert type of horse). Can you help me?"

At this point, I usually let them know I am very sorry to hear about what has happened, and then send them to the info below...I am posting it out there for everyone to see...and my own note is this...research, research, research...WAY too many scam rescues out there...check EVERYONE out before you send in a nickle, ask to visit, ask where the horses come from, where do they go, whats the criteria for adoption, the list to ask is long...so, I am taking it upon myself and will post a list of questions I think everyone needs to ask before opening their heart and their wallets...as I think it really hurts the heart more than the wallet, when trust is betrayed...don't you?

From Guidestar:

Know Your Rights: A Donor's Bill of Rights

January 1997

Another day, another piece of mail asking for a contribution. How do you choose? How do you know that your money will be used well? How can you ensure your mail will not automatically multiply once you've made a donation? A Donor's Bill of Rights can help you determine what is reasonable to expect of an organization to which you are considering making a donation.

Developed by the American Association of Fundraising Counsel, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), A Donor's Bill of Rights identifies ways in which a donor's interests can be promoted and protected.

This document has also been endorsed by Independent Sector, the National Catholic Development Conference, the National Committee on Planned Giving, the National Council for Resource Development, and the United Way of America.

A Donor's Bill of Rights proclaims:

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights.

A donor has the right to:

  1. Be informed of the organization's mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  2. Be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  3. Have access to the organization's most recent financial statements.
  4. Be assured that their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  5. Receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
  6. Be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the fullest extent provided by the law.
  7. Expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  8. Be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization, or hired solicitors.
  9. Have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization intends to share.
  10. Feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful, and forthright answers.
At GuideStar (www.guidestar.org) we encourage you to know your rights as a donor and to seek out all the information you can on an individual nonprofit. You may wish to begin your search for information on a nonprofit organization with the GuideStar database of more than 1.5 million 501(c) organizations.

Let GuideStar be the gateway to your search, but don't let your questions stop here.

Miss Judge - Update - Not Bad for a slaughter bound mare...

You might remember Miss Judge from the April 2009 Pat and Linda Parelli Celebration...she was the rescue chosen to represent all rescue horses in one of 7 Parelli Celebrations across the nation.

She was the mare we pulled from the kill pen with feet the size of dinner plates, but the sweetest face and kindest eye. (you can google Miss Judge Parelli and see her stories or go to our media page to read more about her) Solid, sound (sans dinner feet) and sweet...STILL she was thrown away and headed for slaughter...simply because she didn't get in foal...sigh...

Happy Endings Are Totally Our Thing...ssssoooo....

We had A TON of applications for her...but...we felt the best match was with Pat of PA...and looks like we were right...WOW!!!!

Big Thanks to Pat for giving Miss Judge now known as Tessa a second shot at life...

And big thanks to the HSUS and Pat and Linda Parelli for allowing us to show the world just how great a rescue horse can be!

Baby New Year Update - 1 Year Later - Ready For New Life :o)

Baby New Year upon her arrival at Angel Acres on January 1, 2009

Click photos to enlarge.

This is Baby New Year on the day she was saved from the abuse and neglect she was subjected too...after...say it with me..."she was given to a friend, who was gonna use her for trail riding"

NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE YOUR HORSE AWAY...without doing some soul-searching, lots of research and reference and background checks. You can even download and use our application for adoption if you want!!

When she arrived, she was loaded with worms, her coat was horrible and full of rain rot and scabs, we had the vet out and he scored her a 1.5 on the scale, her teeth were jagged and sharp and she had been eating manure (literally) to survive. She had NO fat anywhere and had the clothes hanger butt going on...not pretty...

Click HERE for her original story and short video clip.

Where she lived 2 other horses and several ponies STARVED to death. How
do you starve a pony to death, they get fat just looking at a half a cup of grain! Her feet were horribly overgrown and the life was gone from her eyes...the vet believes she was days from dying. Needless to say, no shots, no care, nothing but agony and misery for this sweet girl.

I listened to this mare scream, literally scream, for an ENTIRE Week...why you ask, was she screaming? Because the other horses were eating grain and she could only have small amounts of good hay and water. It was heart breaking to listen to, this is an 18 year old mare, she did not deserve the treatment she got from her owners.

But you know us...we like HAPPY ENDINGS....SOOOO....

NOW...YOU GET TO FAST FORWARD TO:

Baby New Year One Year Later!

NO MORE CLOTHES HANGER HINEY! AND SHE'S LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME!

She is sound and ready for her next shot at life...she was (if you can believe this) giving pony/horse rides to kids at a local fair!! She is currently getting back into work and LOVES her barn-mates and the Angel Acres volunteers...please call if you might be willing to open your heart and barn to this girl!

Big thanks to Tom and Fran for helping to get this girl to safety!

Fly Lite - Outstanding Update :o)

This is Fly Lite and Melissa!

Originally saved from the kill pen back in early 2005, with the assistance of her breeder, she was adopted out and then came back to Angel Acres due the adopters financial crisis.

Angel Acres gave a call to the Makers Mark Secretariat Center to see if they might have some room for this sweet girl. They did, we sent her down, fast forward to Melissa and Fly today!

Big thanks to the Makers Mark Secretariat Center for helping us help this girl and thanks to Melissa for taking such great care of her.

Racing To End To Horse Slaughter: The Humane Society of the United States

Racing To End To Horse Slaughter: The Humane Society of the United States

Please read the story below, no gruesome photos though one sad photo of horses being hauled in a cramped truck (shown to the left)...but it's why people like the folks at Angel Acres, Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue, Shiloh Horse Rescue, and many others around the nation live and breathe horse rescue every, single day.

Story is here:

Please do whatever you can to help spread the word about horse slaughter and the need for rescue...contact a local rescue and see if you can volunteer or send a donation to a favorite rescue...any and all of these actions help us save lives.

Thanks HSUS for doing this story!

Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue, Inc.
Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue, Inc.

Help is needed now with placement of Dolly Girl! Please help if you can!Forward to a Friend
Dolly Girl - 9 Year old Thoroughbred Mare -
Needs Home ASAP!

She is located in the Monkton, MD area.

Dolly GirlThis is Dolly Girl

She is sweet, kind, gorgeous, sound and in need of a good home! She is a dark bay, 15.3 hands high, with no prior injuries or health issues.

She gets along well with everyone and is very pleasant to be around, she has show experience, but hasn't been ridden in about 2 years.

She is up to date on Coggins, shots, feet, deworming, etc and is ready to be adopted. She is being retrained to get on the trailer (she trailers and off-loads very well but doesn't like to get on) in a more timely fashion.

So, if you or someone you know, is interested in adopting Dolly please email me and I will get back with you promptly.

She is free to good home...NOT because anything is wrong with her...simply because we are tight on space and she is being boarded out at a friends facility and we want her into a forever home as soon as possible. She likes her new mini friends and she would be a great addition to almost any family/barn!

We do not have any body shots of her due to the 20 degree weather, but she looks fabulous under her binkie! LOL!
