Mojito Gets His Tooties Done - WOW - What A Day!

When Mojito came in to Angel Acres we had been told that his feet had "been done"...well, that meant that the gentleman that he got dumped off on, felt so bad for him (hence the reason we got the call in the first place & he wasn't shot) that he removed the shoes that were on his feet. He didn't even know he had shoes on when he was dropped off because the foot had completely overgrown them!

Look at that sweet, adorable face nuzzling Mr. Chuck...and yes...he REALLY, TRULY is as kind as he looks...

Mojito, an 18 year old Thoroughbred who ponied at the track for at LEAST 10 years, arrived at Angel Acres with his feet in beyond deplorable condition (think platapus/dinner plate feet), his coat was sticky and he had sores down his back and looked dehydrated, to say the VERY least he was in rough shape. Not the shape you'd expect for a horse that worked his WHOLE LIFE for his owner - he was going to be shot or shipped direct to slaughter if we had not been able to intervene and rescue him.

Hhhmmmm....seems Mojito was able to snooker Mr. Greg into getting just - a - little - closer - to the hay pile!!! LOL!!

Today, has been just over 2 weeks since his arrival and he has gained just a bit of weight - we had absolutely no idea what he had been eating, but we knew it wasn't much as he was painfully thin - so we started him on a refeeding program. His skin is DRAMATICALLY better and his coat is looking much better too - the dullness is slowly being replaced by a shiny, new coat.

Mojito's first shoeing was successful - but it took A LOT of work on Chucks part - this horse's feet have been neglected and poorly managed for so long it will take another round of work before we see any dramatic improvement. Chucks best guess of last real foot care? YEARS...sigh...

The right foot in the above photo is done and is padded with soft latex and gives him lift and support - more will be posted about the progress of his feet on his page this coming week.
Mojito after his tooties were done and he was able to finally walk without tripping and stumbling!!

BTW - Many of you remember Chuck, he was the amazingly, wonderful blacksmith that saved Mattie's life back in January of 2007. With Chucks expert care and help, Mojito should be able to live a full and happy life and we feel strongly he will be someone's pride and joy!

Where has the time gone?! YIKES!!

WOW! Can you believe the year is more than half over?! Soon the kids will be back in school, and Fall will be here!!

We have oodles of stuff going on and tons of updates we want to do...unfortunately getting ready for the fair and working on the jewelry store has consumed much of our time, in addition to losing power during storms over the past 2 weeks.

The rescue will be closed from August 18, 2010 thru September 12, 2010 to allow time to get ready for the fair, to attend the fair and then to recover from the fair!! LOL!!!

BIG thanks to the folks (Clare and Deb) at Designs By Clare for all of their gorgeous, handmade jewelry (more will be added tomorrow - we are delayed due to the storms) that's available now in our online store - Angel Acres Shopping For A Cause - and thanks to Hannah, Lauren and Johanna for getting earrings and other jewelry ready...thanks to Fran for getting other fair stuff ready!

Be sure to stop by The Maryland State Fair from August 27, 2010 thru September 6, 2010 we will be in the Exhibition Hall.

We hope to see you guys soon...and the newsletter will go out tomorrow, I promise :o)

Baby New Year Update - MY MY MY....sigh...

Well, we tried our very best to get Baby New Year loaded onto the trailer to get her to her new home...sadly, she would not get on the trailer. We do NOT believe in beating them on the trailer, we do believe in them loading via kindness, and professional ability and always thinking...yep, you are SO getting on that trailer! LOL! Alas, sometimes it doesn't always work.

However, even if we could have gotten her on the trailer (she is 20 years old and was at the same farm for 15 years before given away to be left to starve nearly to death - her story is here) the family (a WONDERFULLY KIND FAMILY) that was planning on adopting her could not have dealt with the trailer issue...they are an older couple, new to trailering and this is not a good combo.

If she were going there to just be trail ridden on the property or just hang out it would have been fabulous! She was not violent, wasn't mean, didn't buck or rear...just planted those tooties and there you go...

Sooooo...our thoughts are...do we REALLY want to try to teach her to load (which really isn't accurate she KNOWS how to load, she doesn't want to) and get her adopted...or do we just let her stay here and let her be a teaching horse for the younger volunteers, and a baby sitter for new horses? I think we are going with the latter...

BIG thanks to Pat for covering her hauling fee...even though she didn't load we still paid (two hours and oodles of Joe Renner's patience - priceless!) her hauling fee (I tried to refund it, I think she threatened me with bodily harm or something LOL!)...and for offering to help us with her issue...I think maybe, she HAS found her forever home at Angel Acres...

Bandito, Starving & left for dead? New Life Starts Today!

Remember Bandito? The horse left to starve to death in a small barn over the winter? He was left in a barn for about 6 weeks, and his friend Gee starved to death. He was left without food and water and was forced to drink his own urine and mud water to survive...

You can see his original story here...

Look at Bandito today!!! He went home with his new Mom Clare and will be pampered for the rest of his life...THANKS CLARE for giving this guy a second chance at life :o)
