Meaning of Rescue - Poem

The Meaning Of Rescue

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed, All nicely tucked in my warm new bed, I'd like to open my baggage, Lest I forget,There is so much to carry -So much to regret.

Hmmm...Yes, there it is, right on the top, Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss, And there by my perch hides Fear and Shame. As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave, I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me. Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack? Or will you just look at my things -And take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack? To put away my baggage, to never repack? I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,But I do come with baggage -Will you still want me?

Jake, Goldie, Maui & Point Status!

Good Morning,

Well...we are going to be posting a running update on the zootoo.com makeover for Angel Acres.

This morning we are in 8th place with 6398 points! The site is fun and informative and there are lots of great people there...we have met a bunch of people so far and more are signing up daily. The goal is to sign up and be active in the community. If you are an animal lover and/or a horse lover, this is the site for you!

If you own pets, simply posting photos and posting reviews about products, other pet services etc earns points for your shelter of choice!

Below is a photo of the boys: Maui, Goldie and Jake at the farm in Sparks, MD.

Fran the Blog Mistress...

Hi There!

A lot happens with the rescue in the course of a day--- just wanted to put a few good words in for our friends and volunteers...

Linda and Lizzie are heroes to me- Lizzie was one of our strongest sellers at the State Fair and her mom, Linda is always there for us.

Pimlico closed the beginning of September and everyone and everything (horses and cats ! ) had to be out. Not only did they (Linda and Lizzie) get the last cat (an orange one!!) but they even went around and picked up horse shoes for Jo to decorate and sell.

We think you 2 are the greatest!

And a BIG thanks to Jen and Jackie (our trainer) for making today "mane" day for Goldie and Maui. Goldie's mane was way TOO long and now he looks like the distinguished "gentleman" that he is. I will get a photo to post.

The "Shoe" Tour
(Rock starts have concert tours but we have the "Shoe" tour)

Another big thank you to my friends Paul Miller and Katharine Cooker at the Humane Society of Washington County. They have invited us to sell our shoes at their "Bark in the Park " event in Hagerstown. We will have LOTS of dog decorated shoes there for sale.

Mark the date Oct. 11th in Hagerstown. For more info go to www.hswcmd.org.

Also, Jackie, our trainer will host our decorated horse shoe sale at the McDonogh School Benefit Horse Show in Owings Mills, Sat. Oct. 4 from 11-1.

I will be there but have my horse showing so I will be a bit busy!! Please come by and say hi!!

And also the same day (October 4, 2008) if you happen to be going to the Maryland Million Race at Laurel stop in at the Gift Shop- we are planning to have our shoes available there for sale!!!

Thank you Laurel Racetrack!!! We appreciate your support!!

I am working on several other projects... will let you know as soon as I have them completed.

In the meantime, on behalf of my buddy Goldie- thank you for your support.

We appreciate it!!

P.S. Keep those green peppermints coming for Goldie- lol!!! He loves them!!

Jake & Token

Hi Everyone!

Thank you to everyone who reposted our newsletter and forwarded it on for Habitat for Horses and for all the emails back of support and concern...they were all forwadrded onto to HFH!

We wish them all the best in their rebuilding efforts.

The photos below were snapped by Patty...can someone keep her away from the camera when I look like the Shaggy D.A.?!?!

This is Token on the left and Jake on the right, sharing an apple...two super sweet boys!

Awww...a little love from Token for Miss Jo!

Habitat For Horses Needs Help!

Hi Everyone...below is our newsletter for this week...we are keeping Jerry and everyone at Habitat For Horses in our thoughts and prayers. Hugs from all of us at Angel Acres to everyone at HFH!

Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue, Inc.
Press Release
Habitat For Horses Needs Our Help...

Change of Plans...

Today was going to be our newsletter announcing the opening of our shoe store. But we just got word in from Fran Burns, our fundraising director, about the destruction of the shelters (among other things) and the loss of the hay at fellow horse rescue facility, Habitat For Horses.

They are located in Texas and the rescue was destroyed by Hurricane Ike and they are in desperate need of donations. I spoke with Jerry Finch just a few moments ago and he said the horses made it through the storm ok, the ranch however, did not.

To view the story click here or copy and paste the url below into your browser:

Our Angel Acres readers are a fabulous group of people, so who better to spread the word about the need for help for at Habitat for Horses than our readers?

HFH does an outstanding job and are a wonderful organization with a fabulous group of volunteers!

Thank you,

Crisis (fixed) at Red Barn!

Well...its 10:25pm and I just got home from the Red Barn! Our Standardbred mare, Belle, decided that she was going to bolt her food and that didn't go well for her. I noticed she wasnt eating about 5 mins after feeding this evening and that is very unusual for Belle.

I observed her for a few mins and sure enough, she started to show the signs of choke. I gave her banamine and called our wonderful vet Dr. Trevor Wells. After trying massage and some cool water from the hose to encourage swallowing, she was not progressing, not getting worse, but not getting better.

Dr. Wells called back (after our initial conversation) in about 10 mins to see how she was doing as she was not in acute distress, but not comfortable either, to check on her. As we were talking and thinking she had passed the obstruction, another large amount of saliva and some pellets of grain were expelled through her nostrils, and Dr. Wells said "see you in a few minutes".

Upon his arrival, we thought maybe she had passed it, but she had not. So, he tubed her (she wasn't digging that at ALL but Dr. Wells is SO amazing with all of our horses he was able to get the tube in and get her going) and the obstruction was broken up and expelled and she is now resting comfortably in her stall.

Thank you Dr. Wells for always being there for the Angel Acres horses! Belle will be brought to our farm tomorrow afternoon for meds and watching. We are so lucky to have Dr. Wells!

Have a great night everyone...we will update you on Belle tomorrow.

Monday, Monday..

Hi,

Well, its the beginning of another week here at Angel Acres. We have been working non-stop on the shoe store...I was up till 2am last night and back up at 8am to get the shoes uploaded and the descriptions added. We have also uploaded most of them to Google. We will be sending out a newsletter in the next day or so.

Ok...now, as I am hear working my fingers to the bone...the engine kitten, Miss Fancy Pants, sleeps soundly next to me. What is an "engine kitten" you ask? Read on...

The kitten hitched a ride in Chucks truck engine and rode up and down I-83 for several hours before Chuck found her...he thought she was being burned (she wasnt thank goodness) and he grabbed her off the engine and she bit him and clawed him in panic...so we had to keep her (once she was wrangled ever so gently from his truck) inside for quarantine, and she hasnt left. MISS FANCY PANTS go OUTSIDE? Oh, I dont think so, she is spoiled rotten and sleeps next to her Daddy (Greg) every night!

HERE SHE IS AT 2AM!

And her partner in crime...Baby Dumpling AKA Doos!

How come I never get to sleep like that!?

Nite nite everyone!

PET FOOD RECALL!

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1034410/pedigree_issues_national_pet_food_recall.html

PLEASE CLICK ABOVE LINK TO VIEW THE PET FOODS AFFECTED BY THIS RECALL.

My son works at Wal-Mart and was instructed to send back tons (literally) of dog and cat food today due to a voluntary recall. I went and googled it and sure enough it is accurate.

Not horsey stuff...but lots of our readers and adopters are dog and cat owners too...so thought someone might need this info.

Good Night Everyone!

An Update From Shiloh...We LUV Shiloh Horse Rescue!

Hi Everyone,

As many of you know Angel Acres enjoys wonderful relationships with some great rescues around the country! Shiloh Horse Rescue is one of those rescues, I was reading their blog today and asked for permission to post one of their posts here. Graciously, Shiloh has allowed me to do so.

Shiloh agreed to take help us place two horses last year, one rescued from slaughter, one was a Finger Lakes TAP horse.

Today, they posted pics of four horses that moved to Hawaii that were adopted through Shiloh ...and yep...two of them are the above mentioned horses!

Now, I want to know...can I go visit the horses? LOL!!

Shiloh is an outstanding example of horse rescue "THE BEST IN THE WEST" could be their slogan!

Be sure to visit their site and blog.

Jill takes the BEST pics and posts daily on Shiloh's Blog and Traveler, their traveling companion, is SO adorable!

You should just read his posts...they are accurate, educational, and simply WAY too cute to be missed!

We also just got word that Colleen, who adopt Dixie, started her own rescue after adopting Dixie!
Hideaway Hill Farm is the name of her rescue, be sure to visit her site!

Thanks for reading!

WOO HOO!

Hi Everyone!

Thank you for the emails I received for the "coffee t-shirt"! I received several replies, all with different links for the shirt and they have a sweat shirt too!

It's going to be my Christmas present to myself!

Am off to check the horses, we are getting huge amounts of rain today and thankfully we are not having any flooding issues...whew...will be posting those pony pics soon...

Happy Friday!

Good Morning!

Ok gang...as many of you know...I am HUGE coffee fan.

Greg and I have a routine. I get his clothes out the night before work and Greg makes the coffee every morning and this super sweet hubby of mine brings it to me (I think he fears for his safety! LOL!) and then I am off on my day.

Whilst at the fair this past week, we saw a shirt...it was a Big Dogs or something to that affect shirt. It had the cutest dog on the back reading the newspaper...the caption read at the top "Pour The Coffee" and under the dog read "Now Back Away Slowly"....the cutest shirt I think I have ever seen!!

So...I came home and started looking for this T-shirt online, to no avail. If anyone knows where I might be able to get one, please email me. I spoke to the gentleman who was wearing the shirt, I practically tackled him to get his attention, said he got it on sale for like $8 or something because they were going out of business....wwwaaaaa...lol.

If anyone has any idea where I can get this shirt...let me know!

Have a great day!!

jo :o)

Janey & Nemo

Hi!

Janey and Nemo have gone to their new home! Lisa was interested in Nemo the pony and liked him, but wanted to bring out her husband Don to meet him.

Well...Janey decided she was going to make a play for Don's attention! She started nuzzling him the moment he got close to her...and the rest, as they say is history. Janey is still underweight (she came into the rescue in REALLY poor condition), and both Lisa & Don know adopting her is a labor of love. They will continue the routine she is on now and we are certain she will continue to thrive and gain weight and become the healthy and strong girl she used to be under their loving care!

When they came to pick them up today they were waiting in the stalls, patiently. The MINUTE Janey heard Don's voice she immediately perked up, ears up and turned toward him. Neither really wanted to load...as its always difficult for the horses to leave the safety of the rescue, but they will be taken care of amazingly well!

BELOW: Janey and her new Daddy, Don!

Janey and new Mom, Lisa...loading like a pro!

Pics of the pony didn't turn out, but will post when I get some from Don & Lisa.

Big Thanks To Lisa and Don for giving this sweet girl and adorable pony a second chance at life!

The Rescue Truck!

Hi!

I am posting a few pics of our rescue truck. We have gotten a couple of emails asking about our truck...why, we dont know...we didn't ask! We have the big black ugly truck that everyone refers to as, well...the ugly truck. Then there is the even bigger, black truck with a dumpbed, that I cant operate (lol)...donated to us by John from Philly.

Then we have the horse rescue truck. It has a mural on both sides that shows a native American riding his horse and ponying another horse through a serene landscape...angelic and haven like...hhhmmmm...coincidence? I DON'T THINK SO!!

Have a great day everyone...tomorrow...pics of our handsome guys and gorgeous girls...and our newly donated feed room building!!

The Rescue Truck headed home from the MD State Fair...

Check out the nifty HORS RSQ tag!!
Close-up of mural...
Toodles,

Mattie....do you remember him?

Hi Everyone,

This is an update on one of our most popular horses, Mattie!

Mattie is continuing to make a great recovery! He had one of the worst cases of founder our blacksmith has ever seen. Thanks to the expert care of our blacksmith, Chuck, and the support from the community, he has recovered to the point of being pasture sound. He does have his off days (usually just before Chuck is due in) but those are fewer and farther between with each passing week.

These photos aren't the best, but we wanted to show you the difference in his feet...compared to his rescue on January 29, 2007.

Thank you to everyone has donated for Matties care and everyone who keeps him in their prayers!

Mattie getting a bite of grass...

BELOW: The medicine plates that have allowed his feet to heal. Most horses would have been put down with founder this severe. We just couldn't look into that face and do that to him...we knew he would let us know if he didnt want to fight anymore, and if he did, we would allow him to go peacefully and with dignity surrounded by the human family that loves him.

That moment hasn't come yet!

Mattie is a learning experience, his condition has gone from horrific and causing him to lay down 18 hours a day to him functioning like a normal horse. Well, as normal as he can be for being spoiled rotten and doted on constantly!

And we didnt need millions of dollars to save him...just the love and kindness of our Angel Acres supporters and the kindness and compassion of one farrier.

This is Brian getting ready to pull the slip and wondering just what the heck he had gotten into...did I forget to mention we were taking pics?!

Brian is reaching in to pull the winning raffle slip....which we had THOROUGHLY mixed around...notice the lovely array of hand decorated horse shoes! LOL!

Brian eyes the winning raffle ticket...hhhmmmm...."do I know this person?" he might be thinking...lol...

The lucky Angel Acres winner is...Dody Burger!!!

Congrats Dody!

We blurred your number...we didnt want you to be over-run with adoring fans! LOL!!

Seriously folks...to everyone who stopped by to say hello and chat, buy a horse shoe, drop a few dollars in our donation jar or just in passing told us you think we are doing a great job...from all of us at Angel Acres...we thank you!

Jo, Patty, Fran, Jackie and the entire Angel Acres gang!

Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day Everyone!

Well, its the last day of the MD State Fair and it has been a great 11 days for Angel Acres! We got to meet A LOT of nice people, we sold a lot of shoes to help our rescue fund, we sold some T-Shirts too!
