Padonia Station Event!

The Angel Acres 2nd Annual Padonia Station Fundraiser was a huge success! We had lots of people come and visit, eat dinner and bid on the silent auction times!! YEA!!

BIG BIG BIG Thanks to Fran Burns who worked tirelessly to make this event go off without a hitch! Working behind the scenes for 6 weeks, asking for silent auction items, driving around the state of MD to pick them all up, package them together, wrote, rewrote and rewrote again the entire list for the site and on and on and on...there really isn't enough space here to tell you everything Fran did for the rescue for this event. Fran works DAILY to help us with all aspects of the rescue... THANKS FRAN, WE LOVE YOU!

Big Thanks to Anne Carter who wrote to different organizations and businesses telling them about our event and asking them if they would like to donate items...we can happily say all but three of the businesses were happy to donate to our auction!

Thanks to Alyssa who helped Fran packaged up the items and ran to the store several times on "supply runs" and helped at the event!

And of course...big thanks to Debi Fowler and the Padonia Station Gang for having us back for a second year...we truly appreciate the kindness they have shown to us (and thanks Debi for the hay runs we ask you to make on 5 minutes notice lol)!!

Truly...we couldn't do what we do without the kindness, generosity and support of many, many people and it would be impossible to thank them all. We know we are very, very lucky to be able to run Angel Acres and save lives that would otherwise end horribly...for this...we are truly grateful.

And finally...big thanks to my husband, Greg Deibel, who puts up with lots of weird happenings on a daily basis (think Lucky and Ricky lol) and still comes home each night!!!!

Hugs from the entire Velvet-Nosed Gang at Angel Acres to everyone who helped make this a huge success for us!

Update on 5 Horses - Fantastic!

The horses listed in this post were pulled from the kill pen by Angel Acres and were rehomed by Royce's Rescue.

Royce's Rescue wanted to help some horses (they were already helping other animals) but didn't have quarantine facilities available...ssssoooo...they called us, and together we decided they could help save a horse by taking some of (one at a time) our guys who had already been through the Angel Acres program and were ready for adoption, allowing us to pull more while helping them get new homes!

FROM LINDA:

Hi Jo,
I thought you might be interested in hearing about some of the horses we have gotten from you and the success they are having.

Vena is pretty much retired living the good life here with us.

Dee is living with her owner on a farm where she is doing theraupudic riding for handycap children!

Mocha's owner is a guy who is just crazy about him and his outgoing personality, still here with us. We call Mocha the barn greeter because he shakes his head at everyone that comes near him as if to say hello.

Ledger who was left to starve (Angel Acres saved him from going to NH after being left to starve in a field, after winning over $200,000 for his owner! His is one of our most popular happy ending stories) is fat and healthy and a wonderful horse for his middle age owner who continues to lesson and learn on him also still here.

And then there's Sissy. Sissy has taken her 54 year old owner to championship in our Associated Horse Show circuit. She is a wonderful horse and very talented and they too are still here with us. It's amazing what life these horses still have after being disguarded.

Royce's Rescue is doing well. Very busy as you well know. Hope all is well with you. Linda

FANTASTIC...THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE LINDA!

Jake aka Garcon Duke - Update - WOW!!!!!

This is Alyssa on Jake aka Garcon Duke aka Fantastic Show Hunter !!

What an outcome for a "Rescue Horse"!

Thank you Coreen for all of your hard work training and reschooling Jake and helping him find his forever home!

Originally adopted out to Lisa and her family, her children needed a less spunky horse (whom they found through Coreen) and Jake was rehomed to Alyssa!

Fabulous Match, we think!!

Update on Cloud - Arabian Gelding - You may remember him...

Cloud is just one of over 40 horses assisted by Mattie's Legacy Fund!

FROM AMY!

Hi Jo,

For the past 2 months, I wanted to add an older horse to my very young herd, but had not searched at all. My intuition told me the right horse would come to me. So, when I saw your urgent email to find a home for Cloud and saw his picture, I knew he was it! Within the 1st hour of Cloud being on my farm, I was celebrating the fact of becoming a foster failure!

Since Cloud's arrival exactly 5 weeks ago, he's grown and changed in many ways.

First, his body has changed. His teeth had not been floated in at least 2 yrs (as estimated by my vet) so he had ulcers inside his mouth from the severe points on all arcades and a bottom tooth which was just sitting in the pocket. When this was lifted out (not connected anymore), a terrible stench came out and Cloud relaxed. Barely eating a flake of hay a day before because of his painful mouth, he now eats normal amounts.

His stools are also getting larger and larger. Cloud shows some mild signs of Cushings disease so I immediately took him off the sugary sweet feed. (None of my horses get grain so he doesn't feel left out). Cloud has been eating lots of free choice minerals, but in the last week his body is balancing. His coat is also changing and the crack in his one hoof is already growing out.

Cloudy came to us quite out of shape so each day he and I walk up and down the steep hill several times to strengthen his stifles and back. The walking is just as good for me as I can use some toning too! The many hills in our pastures along with the fact that his 3yr old and 6 yr old brothers constantly encourage movement and play!

Until last week, Cloud was quite unconfident. Until then, all of our sessions focused on building his confidence and trust in me as a leader. He used to walk ahead of me leading and not stop with me at all. Also, he'd get quite upset when separated from his foster brothers and even more so when they were out of sight so we worked on lots of thresholds and approach and retreat exercises. More than anything, I just gave him undemanding time each evening, where I would stand in the paddock with him while he ate hay, just doing nothing. In the 3rd week, he finally realized that not all people just want to jump on and ride. Now, he chooses to stand with his nose on my shoulder, sniffing my hair for several minutes instead of eat hay.

Our confidence building exercises made a breakthrough last Wed! Before then, he would only load onto the trailer if someone lead him on. Then, we had an amazing groundwork session, he walked on a bridge and with a gentle point towards the trailer, Cloud self-loaded! Since that session, he is totally glued to me, walking right at my shoulder and going anywhere calmly. His attachment and trust is now with me, not the herd or the barn! We then took our first trail ride for about 40 minutes.

This ride was only my 5th ride on him. Cloud was FANTASTIC!! We crossed a stream, walked up a steep hill with a fox and deer running across the field at dusk. Instead of spooking, Cloud stopped and looked to me for leadership! Very rewarding. Cloud was REALLY moving out at all gaits, not because he was scared, but because he was SO SO SO happy! We went through all the gates, he even offered a short gallop, which I took, but then brought him back down.

We've only ridden in a rope halter, no bits. I spent our first 4 riding sessions teaching Cloud one rein stops and to change gaits with my seat, not reins. So, when Cloud offered to gallop, I simply lifted one rein and he calmly came down to a halt and stood for several minutes with the reins draped on his neck.

Being a 25yr old Arabian, his energy level is still a great match with my youngsters! Cloud has a lot to teach me and I to teach him as well. With all the progress we've made over 5 weeks, I can't wait to share our progress with you over the months and years to come! Cloud has found his last home!

Thank you for connecting our lives and spirits,

Amy & Cloud

PS- The attached picture will allow you to see all the back muscle he's put on as well as a picture of Cloud with his brothers (Epoch was getting quite bored being asked to stand still for their picture!)

Urgent Home Needed For Older Appy Gelding!

This just in from one of our humane officer friends in MD...Please cross post far and wide!

Help is needed for a 20 + year old Appaloosa gelding he is located in Frederick County, Md in the Rocky Ridge Area.

He is in an extremely neglectful home and is desperate need of re-homing. Owner is cooperative and is will to sign to horse over. He is in good body, but needs severe hoof care. He must go to a home that understands he is just a field ornament/pasture pal.

Grass and hay is all that he needs… he is on some grain thanks to the neighbor but he doesn’t need it. He is a bit hard to catch but once caught he is a good boy. If you can help this sweet guy...

Please Contact Officer Luther at BLuther@FrederickCountyMD.gov or call her at 301-600-3737

Stormie - Adopted last weekend by Tokens Mom, Nikki!

Stormie was another TB mare in danger...she is by a fabulous sire and just needed a chance at life...not making it on the track, she ended up at New Holland...fast foward... a few calls and a place to go (thank you Clare!), and she was safe!

Now residing with her equine buddies in Erie, PA and new Mom, Nikki, she is settling in well. This photo does not do her justice...she is a gorgeous mare...we will update with new photos soon!

Big thanks to Nikki and her family for being an Angel Acres repeat adopter...

Pilot...20 year old TB finds forever home!!!

Pilot and Jo leaving for home...Pilot was bought at auction a few years ago...turned into a lesson horse...then was going to be headed back to auction because he was no longer needed in the riding program. They said they didn't really want to send him to the sale, so they contacted a friend of ours, who tracked us down (not very hard to do lol) and we bought him from them.

Pilot is an outstanding, wonderful guy and Jo was looking for a horse to help out/rescue and for someone calm and wonderful to ride...she had received our email about helping out Cloud and Belle...and since Cloud had a home (thank you Amy) we suggested she consider Pilot.

And the rest...as they say...is history! Big thanks to Jo for giving this guy a wonderful, loving home!!!

Tee Abandoned At Farm - Now Beloved Horse...Priceless...

Tee and Thelma...Thelma adopted Tee about 3 weeks ago...looks like he's found his forever home!

Tee was abandoned at a boarding farm in Northern York County and after 6 months, the owner of the farm needed to get him placed...and we give this gentleman a TON of credit!

He took care of Tee, got his feet done, fed him, made sure he was groomed, etc AND tracked me down (we were away, then cell trouble, then sick son etc) and asked for our help...all while trying to track down the dead beat woman who owned him...he followed the rules of playing fair and still lost out on 6 to 8 months board...sigh...

Why can't people take care of their animals and if not, ASK FOR HELP instead of avoiding the issue and putting their horse in danger? The gentleman could have sent Tee off to auction, but he has a kind heart and didn't want to do that, lucky for Tee...others horses have not been so lucky who were in a similar situation.

Kudos to Charlie for taking care of him, Kudo's to our favorite Parelli Student/Instructor Amy for offering him a ride and refusing to accept a penny, and of course, Kudo's to Thelma for taking this sweet guy into her heart and home!

Dumpster Diving For Angel Acres ;o)

Well, well, well...lol...looks like Ms. Fran, Linda and Scott are on their way to a race track in Maryland...they are on a mission...Dumpster Diving for SHOW Program Labels to help the Angel Acres horses!! What a wonderful thing to do for our rescue horses!

They will be rooting through lots of feed bags (scissors and stapler in hand) for the Legends, Reliance and Triple Crown labels (proof of purchase NOT bar codes) from the feed bags left for recycling at the track. Each label they collect earns us 25 cents...may not sound like a lot...but so far, Ms. Fran aka Dustins' Dreamer and Gee's Mom, has collected (in about a week) $72 worth of labels!! Thats at least 7 bags of grain for our gang!!

Be sure to write to Fran for more info about the program!

    Thanks Gang!!

Also...be sure to check out the Angel Acres Gift Store for great gifts for your horse and non horsey friends!

    Greetings!

It's been a busy month for the Angel Acres volunteers! Mattie's Legacy Fund continues to assist horse owners in need of help due to financial or other hardships. Due to the fabulous support we have received for Mattie's Fund, 32 horses are safe and will not be headed to auction!

We want to thank Fran Burns and Dustin's Dreamer for their wonderful support of the Angel Acres Gang & Mattie's Legacy Fund! For every blue ribbon won, Fran donates $10 to our rescue fund...well, Dreamer was winning like crazy and we were able to save Lucky Day from a very unlucky fate, as a direct result of Fran and Dreamer.

EMERGENCY HOME NEEDED! PLEASE CROSS POST AND FORWARD

There are two horses in desperate need of homes, they have been assisted by Mattie's Legacy Fund, but the barn manager decided they needed to leave now, instead of in two months, as we were told!

Mattie's Legacy's Bridge The Gap Fund has paid for their Coggins, shots, vet...we were planning to place them, but not with such short notice!

We are looking for a home or even foster care for Belle and Cloud, an 8 year old gorgeous Dark Bay TB mare and 25 year old flea bitten grey Arabian. Below is the email info from owner:

"Belle is an 8 year old thoroughbred mare. She stands 15.3H last time measured. Belle has been ridden English and has the smoothest gates i have ridden.I would consider her slightly green broke. She would excel in dressage and with little training would be a great show horse. She is a sweet horse..."

Cloud (grey gelding shown above) is a 25 year old Arabian. He is 15.1H and flea-bitten gray. He loads, ties, and clips. He will pretty much do anything you ask if he trusts you. He is a great trail horse and will go any where. Cloud is a big sweetheart. Almost anyone can ride him on trails."

They are located 30 minutes North of Harrisburg PA. Please write to me directly at angelacreshorsehaven@yahoo.com or call me at 717-965-7901 if you can help in anyway.

    Mattie's Fund Strikes Again!

    Mattie's Legacy Fund strikes AGAIN!

Mattie's Legacy Fund is assisting a horse owner with feed, hay, and blankets for
her two horses, she could not afford to keep due to temporary financial
situation. After verifying info, we assisted her and will help for another month or two. She has since found a second job and will be able to keep her two babies!

We couldn't do this without the support we receive from our readers and volunteers, who help collect blankets, feed coupons, and more! Mattie
really is still watching over other horses in need, isn't he?

This is beautiful - written by Patty Barnhart

When I am Old...(this is me now - minus the social security!)

I shall wear diamonds And a wide brimmed straw hat
With silver and leather on it and I shall spend my social security
    On white wine and carrots

And sit in the alley of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer's night And ride the chestnut mare Across the moonstruck meadow. If my old bones will allow.

When people come to call I will smile and nod As I walk them past the gardens to the barn And show, instead, the beauty growing there In stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will shovel and sweat and Wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel. And I will be an embarrassment to all Who look down on me.

They've not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend, A friend who waits at midnight hour
With nuzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be When I am Old.

Mattie's Legacy Fund - Steps Up Again!

Matties Legacy Fund helps save 3 horses bound for slaughter! We got an email from one of our readers asking for assistance with 3 horses in danger of going to slaughter in NJ...they had raised the funds to buy the horses, but dealer decided to up the... anty an extra $50 per horse!

So, we got the email, did some investigating (rescue is VERY reputable & had homes/safe haven for them) and we helped with the remainder they were unable to raise. We couldn't do this without community support!

Please consider donating to Matties Legacy Fund today!

    A Rescuer's Answering Machine

    A RESCUERS ANSWERING MACHINE:

Hello: You have reached ___-____, Tender Hearts Rescue. Due to the
high volume of calls we have been receiving, please listen closely to
the following options and choose the one that best describes you or
    your situation:
    >
Press 1 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has
suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home
    right away.
    >
Press 2 if you are moving today and need to immediately place your
    150 pound, 8-year-old dog.
    >
Press 3 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of
your dogs because you are the only person in the world to have a
baby and dogs at the same time.
    >
Press 4 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old dog is having
problems adjusting so you want to get rid of the old one right away.
    >
Press 5 if your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and
cute and you want to trade it in for a new model.

Press 6 if you want an unpaid volunteer to come to your home TODAY
and pick up the dog you no longer want.
    >
Press 7 if you have been feeding and caring for a "stray" for the
last three years, are moving and suddenly determine it's not your
    dog.
    >
Press 8 if your dog is sick and needs a vet but you need the money

their elderly dog because it doesn't fit your lifestyle.
    >
Press 14 if you are calling at 6 a.m. to make sure you wake me up
before I have to go to work so you can drop a dog off on your way
    to work.
    >
Press 15 to leave us an anonymous garbled message, letting us know
you have left a dog in our yard in the middle of January, which is
in fact, better than just leaving the dog with no message.
    >
Press 16 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to
take your dog that you have had for fifteen years, because it is
    not our responsibility.
    >
Press 17 if you are going to threaten to take your ten year old dog
to be euthanized because I won't take it.
    >
Press 18 if you're going to get angry because the volunteers had the
audacity to go on vacation and leave the dogs in care of a trusted
volunteer who is not authorized to take your personal pet.
    >
Press 19 if you want one of our PERFECTLY trained, housebroken, kid
and cat friendly purebred dogs that we have an abundance of.
    >
Press 20 if you want us to take your dog that has a slight
aggression problem, i.e. has only bitten a few people and killed your
    neighbor's cats.
    >
Press 21 if you have already called once and been told we don't take
personal surrenders but thought you would get a different person this
    time with a different answer.
    >
Press 22 if you want us to use space that would go to a stray to
board your personal dog while you are on vacation, free of charge,
    of course.
    >
Press 23 if it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning and you want me to
deliver an eight week old puppy to your house by 6:30 am before
    your kids wake up.
    >
Press 24 if you have bought your children a duckling, chick or baby
bunny for Easter and it is now Christmas and no longer cute.
    >
Press 25 if you want us to take your female dog who has already had
ten litters, but we can't spay her because she is pregnant again and
    it is against your religion.
    >
Press 26 if you're lying to make one of our younger volunteers feel
bad and take your personal pet off your hands.
    >
Press 27 if your cat is biting and not using the litter box because
it is declawed, but you are not willing to accept the responsibility
that the cat's behavior is altered because of your nice furniture.
    >
Press 28 if your two year old male dog is marking all over your house
but you just haven't gotten around to having him neutered.
    >
Press 29 if you previously had an outdoor only dog and are calling
    because she is suddenly pregnant.
    >
Press 30 if you have done "everything" to housebreak your dog and
have had no success but you don't want to crate the dog because it
    is cruel.
    >
Press 31 if you didn't listen to the message asking for an evening
phone number and you left your work number when all volunteers are
also working and you are angry because no one called you back.
    >
Press 32 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because
today is your daughter's birthday and you forgot when she was born.
    >
Press 33 if your dog's coat doesn't match your new furniture and you
need a different color or breed.
    >
Press 34 if your new love doesn't like your dog and you are too
stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you in the next
month anyway) instead of the dog.
    >
Press 35 if you went through all these 'options' and didn't hear
enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of tears being
shed by one of our volunteers who is holding a discarded old dog
while the vet mercifully frees him from the grief of missing his
    family.

Cee Cee Pictures and Update From Amy her Parelli trainer!

    Hi Jo,

Of course, another great session with Cee Cee today! She actually came straight to me today and walked around just following me with no halter/lead for a quite a while.

Her foster mom Angie also reported that she turned her out Saturday, took off her halter and Cee Cee decided to continue to follow her around so Angie did some liberty exercises with her and just loved on Cee Cee for her willing connection

    she's established so quickly!

Cee Cee Update - Parelli Foster Training - From Amy!

    Hello Jo,

Hope the fair is going well. I'm sure going back and forth is weighing on you!

I just returned from my 3rd session with Cee Cee this week. My first statement is WOW ... she is one remarkable horse on so many levels! Her progress each time we play is just incredible in that she retains every little tidbit and moves on to give even more than the last time. Our focus has been developing her confidence with objects, areas, thresholds, etc and also using some leading exercises. She trotted along with me many times tonight ON HER RIGHT SIDE, stopped and even backed, once just off my body movement (no action in the lead line or w/ the stick!). I was also able to drive her front end in a complete 360 circle just off the energy in my body!

We were working on figure 8's with orange cones which she was quite skeptical about at first. We worked through those thresholds for a a few minutes and all of a sudden she marched up to the one cone and knocked it over with her nose! Then, she came over to me and nicely asked for me to scratch her forehead. HUGE for her!

Her foster mom Angie and her foster brother Dreamer are all loving her too! CeeCee is such a VERY HAPPY HORSE!

With this progress, we may begin working on mounting and riding as early as next weekend!

I'll try to remember to bring my camera along when we play on Monday to give you some blog/facebook photos to post.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend,

    Amy
