Can You Help Us

May 28, 2011 - Glenville, PA

You wouldn't believe what happened today...wait, let me back up, if you know us, you might!

Three weeks ago Greg used the tractor to dump the manure spreader, a normal everyday thing, but this time, while on his way back to the rescue one of the gigantic 400lb rear tires came off WHILE he was driving, took out the neighbors fence and basically scared the daylights out of him! (lots happened but we don't want to take up oodles of your time)

Fast forward to today - Greg after, A LOT of work, got the tractor tire back on and the tractor running again - he dumped 2 loads of manure, took a 5 minute break before going back to work, got back on the tractor and turned the key - this time the tractor LITERALLY blew up and caught fire!

Flames were shooting up past the steering wheel and then engulfing the engine. I saw it myself and started yelling, "get off the tractor, get off the tractor!" He jumped off the tractor, grabbed a fire extinguisher from the barn and put out the fire.

Thankfully, he is ok, having only some burnt leg hairs, and a now paranoid wife who won't let him start the tractor! I made a few calls (and yes for those of you wondering, I did manage to get ONE shot of the tractor on fire before he put it out lol) and have some good news and hoping you can help us.

We have an Angel who will help us get a replacement tractor - the lower end of what we need runs about $10,000 - by matching any funds we can raise during the next two weeks!!! That means your donation is doubled - $10 would be $20 - $20 would be $40 - etc!!

We use a tractor almost every day for dumping manure, dragging fields, plowing snow, and the tons of other "man stuff" my husband does with it. It is an absolute necessity for any horse rescue to have an operational tractor, doesn't have to be pretty or cute, just has to run and not blow up and catch on fire when you turn the key...lol...

Due to the fact that our tractor is more than 60 years old, is fixed and repaired almost daily and now has become a health hazard we are asking everyone to please share this email and donate if you can.

We receive no federal, state or corporate funding. We rely on donations, fundraisers, grants, etc.

PLEASE help us raise the funds needed to get a replacement tractor & help keep Greg safe ;o)

You can click HERE to donate securely online - please note TRACTOR FUND in the designation box. All donations are tax deductible...AND if you happen have a spare tractor just laying around and would like to donate it - please let us know!

Angel Acres - Crockets Journey Has Ended...

Crockets Journey Has Ended...

donate to angel acresAngel Acres is deeply saddened to let you know that Crocket's journey has come to an end. (His original rescue story is HERE.)

When I went out to feed yesterday morning Crocket was down in his stall - he could not get up. We called the vet in immedately & and based upon his advice and some very, very deep soul searching, we did the most humane thing we could do....end his suffering.

Crocket must have been injured prior to him being left in a field in West Virginia to starve (sadly no one has ever stepped up to take responsibility for that) neary to death and the emergency call we got back in November 2010.

I swore I would not cry, good rescuers don't cry I tell myself, A LOT, well I did...and when the vet said, "he's running now"...my heart broke, but I also felt he was finally at peace...even though we did absolutely everything we could for him, I feel somehow we have failed him.

Euthanasia is not something we ever, ever take lightly, but with his hindend no longer willing or able to function for him (vet noted extensive nerve damage & prior injury upon his arrival into main rescue), we gave him a peaceul ending surrounded by people that loved and cared for him.

One small victory for Crocket, was that his last 6 months were spent being loved on by people who truly, deeply cared for him. The fact that he did NOT starve to death, cold and alone in a field, that he passed with diginity, kindness and compassion, for that small gift, we are grateful.

For those that didn't know Crocket his arrival into the main rescue is detailed HERE. He was happy, had gotten into the Angel Acres groove and we think, knew he was loved.

We would also like to take this moment to thank Deanne and her family for fostering him until he was strong enough to be trailered into us. Thank you to Joe Renner for dropping everything that super cold November morning and getting Crocket to safety.

Thank you for being apart of the Angel Acres Gang.

Ponies Are Safe, A Personal Thank You From Angel Acres

Angel Acres

Hay, We Need It!

THANK YOU!!

matties legacy fundAngel Acres has been using Mattie's Legacy Fund to help several horses in dire need of assistance this month - one case involving 2 ponies in need was incredibly urgent. (check out our blog for details on the other cases we are assisting)

A young couple needed help to get two of their ponies to safety. Cozee Valee Rescue in Huntingdon, PA agreed to take them in and rehome them. We needed your help to get them to safety as Mattie's Legacy Fund had already covered the hay, grain, shots, dental, coggins, etc for these ponies and their other horses. (in addition to helping other horses from other families)

We would like to thank everyone who donated and helped us get them to safety with a special Angel Acres THANK YOU shout-out to Emily, Kathleen, Traci, Mary Anne, Lynne, Melinda, Michael-David and Pat.

Thank you to Beth at Cozee Valee for stepping up without hesitation when I called. Thank you to Joe Renner who is always at the ready to assist and haul a horse in need. Thank you to everyone who took a moment to retweet, share, email, etc. our email asking for help.

Thank you to Ellie & Sandy who are now considering applying to be an Angel Acres emergency foster home.

We also send out a silent thanks to Mattie for always being with us in spirit, for without him and the legacy he left behind, there would be no Mattie's Legacy Fund & no assistance to the hundreds of horses we have helped in his honor.

The Sweetest Donation of All :o)

Rescuers have A LOT really depressing, sad, heart breaking days, A LOT of days like this and most days are thankless, but we don't do it to be told how great we are or for the pat on the back or the glamour (have you seen me in that stunning layered flannel and sexy pink hat attire?! lol)...we do it for the horses. PERIOD.

So, when we get a note in the mail like the one below, it really chokes us up and let's us know that some folks see how hard are we work. It makes the work we do even more valuable, when we realize that little children, still in the single digits, can be inspired by the beauty and grace of horses and appreciate the rescuers efforts to save them.

"Dear Ms. Deibel,

We received your email on the Hay Drive. Livia (7) and Maggie (6) worked for 2 days selling drawings they made. The drawings were sold to neighbors for $0.25 each. They hope to start riding lessons this summer and to someday be able to adopt a horse or two from Angel Acres. Thank you for working so hard to save horses..."

These little girls made $20 for our horses, that is A LOT of drawing and hard work on their part, and that hard work bought the Angel Acres gang 10 bales of much needed hay...if these little girls can do something so wonderful, imagine what we all can do with a little effort :o)

Thank you ladies for brightening this rescuers day and making me cry and smile at the same time.
