Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue

Anti Horse Slaughter Billboards

Glenville, PA - Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue (www.saveahorsenow.org) is pleased to announce that the newest billboard in their campaign to educate the general public about horse slaughter has gone up in Calgary, Canada, home of the Calgary Stampede. Horses that are not suitable as "bucking stock" for the stampede are sent to slaughter cites a May 2012 article by the Vancouver Humane Society http://www.vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca/calgary-stampede-sends-young-horses-to-slaughter/

The billboard guides the reader to its companion website www.stopslaughteringus.ca which provides up to date factual information regarding horse slaughter and what residents of Canada can do to help end slaughter in their country.

According to the USDA, exactly 133,241 U.S. horses were sent to slaughter last year. These horses are transported to Mexico and Canada in double decker trailers for slaughter and the meat is shipped to Europe for human consumption. Angel Acres’ grassroots campaign is funded strictly by horse advocates donating to the billboard campaign. The educational campaign is separate from the rescue activities.

Charlotte Uhrich, board sponsor said, "We are pleased to put this Anti Horse Slaughter Billboard up in support of NDP MP Alex Atamanenko and his Bill C-322, a Bill to end horse slaughter in Canada. Horse slaughter is inhumane and barbaric, we do not slaughter and eat our companion animals in Canada. The closet door has been opened to Canada's dirty little secret and it is time to end this evil practice."

Acres Horse Haven Rescue is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit rescue located in Glenville, PA dedicated to saving horses bound for slaughter for human consumption. Glenville, PA - Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue (www.saveahorsenow.org) is honored to announce they have been selected as one of the beneficiaries of the Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show at Pimlico Racetrack, Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday July 14, 2012.

The horse show is the brainchild of Georganne Hale, Maryland Jockey Club Racing Secretary and Stacie Clark-Rogers, manager of Adena Springs Retirement program in Canada.

There will be eight different classes held in the infield of the racetrack during the day with six ribbons awarded for each class and more than $4000 in prize money. HTRV will streamline the horse show live from Pimlico.

Jo Deibel, Founder and Director of Angel Acres, said, “Angel Acres is super happy that the Md. Jockey Club and Adena Springs Retirement Farm put this show together as it helps to raise awareness about all of the outstanding Thoroughbreds that are available and are looking for second careers at rescues around the nation.”

The money from the horse show entries will be divided among 3 horse rescue charities that have helped the track find homes for horses that raced in Maryland. In addition to Angel Acres they include, MidAtlantic Horse Rescue and Thoroughbred Placement Rescources. Both Angel Acres and MidAtlantic Horse Rescue are accredited by GFAS. Sadly, they've been turned down by 2 sanctuaries so far & we really want to find them a permanent place to live out their lives. The care they are getting now is excellent, but they do not have someone to call their own.
Each girl has a few sponsors, but nowhere near the $480 (that is exactly what the feed, hay and supplements cost the farm owner) needed each month - $240 per horse.
PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!

THIS is the mindset we are up against...sigh...

Below is my unedited response to an individual who wonders why I don't want horses to be slaughtered. I swear, I could not make up the stuff I get in my emails...from the naive to the nasty pro slaughter folks. I don't know where this one falls - but thought I would share just a sampling of what I get, daily.

Emailers question is at very bottom, my response is immediately below...we are ANTI horse slaughter.

Hi,

If they (as in the folks who slaughter horses) were "putting them down" humanely, I would have a paying job.

Horse slaughter is not, at any point in the process from auction to killing floor, humane. The captive bolt is NOT humane for horses.

Mares, pregnant mares, foals, stallions, etc all being crammed on double decker trucks made for much shorter cattle and the being beaten, screamed at, electrocuted, etc  to get off the truck is NOT humane. Horses hanging upside by one leg with their throats slit still being able to reach out and kick their killer is NOT humane.  Mares having their foals literally ripped out of the stomachs and live foals being tossed in the trash is not humane.

(all mentioned above are documented via video taped events at horse slaughter plants and those are just a few of the thousands of documents abuses taking place at slaughter plants)

Skinny, starved, abused etc horses usually do NOT go to slaughter. The kill buyers get paid for horses in good weight and usually do not buy old, starved horses or sick horses.

And if they are ill - and usually they are not - who is going to want to eat them? You do know that humans are eating horse meat? Horse meat tainted with cancer causing drugs - would you (if you ate meat) eat a sick cow - or if you don't eat meat would you eat an obviously rotten apple or orange.

There isn't a horse on the planet that deserves to be slaughtered.

Trust me, I work NON STOP from the minute I wake up till, well let's see it's Sunday at nearly 9pm and I am still working, I go to bed, if it were humane I wouldn't be writing this email and I would have a normal life without the horrors I have to see, almost daily.

Dear Jo,
One question. I want to know something. Why do you not want them to be slaughtered? I know it's bad but.... would you rather put them down or watch them suffer? One more question are they getting slaughtered for no reason or because they are ill. If its for no reason thats wrong. But if there ill they should be because they'll be in more and longer pain if their ill.

Glenville, PA - Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue (www.saveahorsenow.org) is pleased to announce that the newest billboard in their campaign to educate the U.S. public about horse slaughter has gone up in Salem, Oregon. The billboard guides the reader to its companion website www.stopslaughteringus.com which provides up to date factual information regarding horse slaughter.

Angel Acres’ grassroots campaign is funded strictly by horse advocates donating to the billboard campaign. This billboard was sponsored by Oregonians Against Horse Slaughter. The educational campaign is separate from the rescue activities.

“Horse slaughter is a predatory for-profit business, not a replacement for responsible ownership practices, and there are resources available for horse owners needing assistance,” states Jennifer Kunz, member of the grassroots group Oregonians Against Horse Slaughter.

Acres Horse Haven Rescue is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit rescue located in Glenville, PA dedicated to saving horses bound for slaughter for human consumption. Oregonians Against Horse Slaughter is a group comprised of horse owners, rescues, trainers, and other concerned citizens. They oppose the slaughter of horses in the United States, and specifically Oregon, for multiple reasons. They do not believe tax dollars should be spent subsidizing foreign interests in a failing industry that does not provide food for Americans. They believe commercial horse slaughter is not and cannot be made humane, and the food safety issues are enormous. Further, slaughter plants also kill communities with increased crime rates and burdens on municipal resources. They ask that Oregon residents step forward to protect the state, and the horses.
