Tomorrow Aaron & I will be back at the fair from Noon till 6pm and then will be relieved by Greg and Diane. We are thankful to be at the fair and getting to meet and chat with so many great people.

Will add some pics soon!

Jackie Showacre No Longer Associated With Angel Acres

To Whom It May Concern,

It has come to my attention that there was a misunderstanding amongst several horse people about horses currently residing at the farm (Taylor's Purchase in Sparks, Md) being rented by Jackie Showacre. The horses at that farm are NOT horses that belong to Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue, Inc.

We are no longer affiliated with Jackie Showacre (she is now married last name Harward or something similar) and none of our horses reside with her.

Thank you,

Jo

Best Michael Vick Protest Video - NOT Graphic...

This truly has gotten my ire up...I absolutely have NO free time to be doing this...but I will put other personal things on the back burner to help protest this vile, disgusting, worthless, waste of human flesh's NFL reinstatement and his subsequent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles...I bet that TONS of Philly fan are enraged by this.

I think there are about 13 million dogs that are owned, loved and cared for by Americans...that's A LOT of people to irritate for the sake of winning the Super Bowl and for the almighty dollar. I don't know how they will sleep at night...I hope the cities they visit protest each and every game!

Truth about rescue horses...

Ok, I have been debating for quite some time about whether or not to address this issue...and I have decided its about time to do it!

I must get at least 4 emails a week asking if our horses are ridable and what problems they have, because they are rescue horses. Almost always with a connotation that SOMETHING must be wrong with them...NOT THE CASE!!!

NOT all rescue horses have problems, in our case and in the case of many other horses, their only crime was not being fast enough to earn their keep. MANY of our horses have gone onto become show horses, eventers, hunters, jumpers, polo ponies, trail horses, pleasure horses, 3 day eventers and on and on and on...

I will post more details on this nightly...I can only begin to scratch the surface in this first post...stay tuned for more posts about rescue horses aren't all crippled and unridable (though some are) or why a rescue horse should be your next horse!

Long Long Day!

Today was a busy, busy day at Angel Acres!

Volunteers galore, lots of brainstorming about fundraising ideas (and WOW do we have an amazing one in the works!) , schooling horses, washing horses, mucking stalls, scrubbing water buckets and painting and decorating lots of shoes for the fair!

Due to the crazy demand we have had in the past couple of years for the decorated horse shoes and our near inability to keep up with demand (Jo bawling at the kitchen table with a hot glue gun and coffee at 2am during the week of the fair does not count as keeping up, pretty funny now though! LOL) in time for the holidays, our store will be open from Sept 19, 2009 till December 10th 2009. That way we can make sure everyone that orders shoes, will get them in time for holiday delivery.

We will also ship direct to a recipient (with a holiday card enclosed) for anyone who would like us to.

Finally, I had planned to post lots of updates tonight, but I can barely keep my eyes open and decided to wait till tomorrow...I am guessing there would be a lot of typos and stuff I would have to fix later! LOL!

Have a great night everyone!

European Union Bans American Horsemeat

Europeans focus on food safety issue: no more poisoned American Horse Meat

August 6, 2009 -- Hitchcock, Texas -- For decades, the gourmet diners of Europe and Japan have eaten American horse meat poisoned by chemical contamination. The horse flesh exporting by unscrupulous producers and horse slaughter plants will come to an end in April of 2010. The new rules enacted by the European Union will mandate chemical free horse meat entering those countries.

American horses are routinely given powerful chemicals prohibited for human consumption such as wormers, Phenylbutazone (Bute), and a host of other deadly medications which are life giving to a horse but cause serious medical issues when ingested by humans. Like DDT, banned for similar reasons, some of these compounds such as Bute remain in a horse's body long after administered. Studies indicate medical issues such as birth defects, anemia, and cancer are brought on when these dangerous chemicals are consumed by humans.

The ban was quietly announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in late July. It quickly exploded across the Internet as news of it made its way to anti-slaughter websites and finally to mainstream equine media worldwide. With the new ban in place, the slaughter of horses exposed to these drugs will stop and the production of commercially available horse meat will grind to a halt.

“We have known of the dangers of chemicals in American horsemeat for years, but our warnings have often fallen on deaf ears,” said Jerry Finch, founder of Habitat for Horses, the nation’s largest all breed equine rescue organization.

“Thankfully, agencies in the European Union responsible for health safety realized that there is virtually no testing for dangerous chemicals in American horses being sold for food,” he said. “Foreign governments will inadvertently bring the slaughter of American horses to a halt while the American government, with their failure to pass legislation, has simply ignored the health of the European people.”

Finch says that the same EU rules will halt the export of American horses slaughtered in Mexico for European consumption.

Habitat for Horses (HfH) is a not-for-profit equine protection agency committed to the prevention, rescue and rehabilitation of neglected and abused horses. The largest organization of its kind in North America, HfH operates a rehabilitation ranch in Hitchcock, Texas, as well as a growing network of foster homes throughout the United States.

Repost by R.T. Fitch - Excellent Editorial Post

PLEASE COPY AND CROSS POST THE EDITORIAL BELOW BY R.T. FITCH.

Opinion: Slaughtering horses, poisoning people; is the U.S. asleep at the wheel?

In Horse Slaughter on August 5, 2009 at 10:52 am
by R.T. Fitch

It’s out in the open, there’s no denying or running away from it now. The anti-horse people have been attempting to keep it under wraps for ages but, today, it’s staring them right in the face and there’s a great big draft horse standing in their living rooms; the EU now recognizes that the meat from American horses, slaughtered in Canada and Mexico, is toxic and dangerous for human consumption due to the equine medications it retains (Link).

New Hope for our American Horses (photo by Terry Fitch)

For years Pro-Horse advocates have been telling us that besides being immoral and socially repugnant the business of horse slaughter was flooding the European and Asian specialty meat markets with tainted and toxic meat. Meat that is dangerous for humans to consume. Equine medications are clearly marked that they are not for use on food animals and horses have not and are not considered food animals by American society and government agencies such as the USDA. So what’s the deal?

If all of us had our eyes wide open, then why did we allow foreign owned slaughter plants to operate within our borders for years without any federal intervention? The majority of the U.S. public was crying out to stop this barbaric practice yet our government in D.C. appeared not to be listening. What does that say of our elected, federal representatives who continually dragged their feet and tied up pro-horse legislation in committees, year after year?

The slaughter plants were closed in 2007 but, last year, we allowed 133,000 healthy American horses to be inhumanely shipped across our public highways and over our borders to be slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. Currently the bills H.R. 503 and S. 727 (The Equine Cruelty Prevention Act of 2009) designed to stop this practice, are going absolutely nowhere. “Hey boys and girls, we aren’t just talking about killing horses, here, we are talking about poisoning and possibly injuring human beings, now!”

It looks like there might be more than just the blood of horses on the hands of our government leaders. One thing is for certain, within the world community, there certainly is egg on their faces.

But all the blame does not sit in the lap of our federal government. What about the state governments that have, as of late, been trying to jump upon the “horse killing/people poisoning” bandwagon hoping and praying that all of that blood letting might net them an extra buck or two. Take Ed Butcher from Montana for example.

Butcher (no intentional play on words) ramroded a partisan bill through his state’s government that not only opens the door to allow foreigners to come into the state to open horse slaughtering facilities but also impedes the rights of the public to protest the construction of such plants. Where is the moral compass in all of that mess? It sure doesn’t reside in the offices of Montana’s state government as it now appears that they publicly approve and endorse not only the butchering of a passive, companion animal but the poisoning of people in foreign lands.

We, the American public, do have the ability to turn this wagon train of destruction around and perhaps save some face in the opinion of the global community. We can pick up the phone, write an email or fax our elected representatives and tell them that we want them to co-sponsor and support H.R. 503/S.727 because enough is enough. The senseless butchering of our American icon has always been nagging at our soul but now the prospect of poisoning people is just going too far over the top.

It’s time to put an end to this dirty, bloody secret and cleanse our spirits by standing up for what is right, morale and just. Talk to your representative and ensure that they understand your passion and your commitment to take back into control the political machine that has been heading down the mountain without any brakes. Give them direction, pledge your support and if you are snubbed or ignored, vote them out, it’s your right.

That’s the only way we are going to clean this mess up, if they won’t listen and continue to ignore the voice of the people who elected them, then oust them at the very first opportunity.

It’s time to clean house, its way past time to stop the killing and it’s the perfect time to head off any further potential poisoning of human beings. Pick up the phone, make the call, we have the ability and the power to get this wagon train back on the trail.

Let’s make it happen.

May the Force of the Horse® be with you.
