This is Paige and Jack - Jack, along with Mattie, was pulled out of the kill pen on on January 29, 2007 - this is an update on Jack with Paige.

As you can see from the pictures, Jack is doing

fabulously well and Paige loves him very much!

What a fabulously, happy ending for a once slaughter bound horse.

You can look back through our blog and see updates on Jack and many of our other horses....

Big thanks to Paige and her family for giving Jack the life he desperately deserved all those years ago!

We have had a busy week, as usual, and have been a bit pokey in the blogging department! We will try to get back to blogging once a day asap! As we are gearing up for the Maryland State Fair, it will get crazier! Please check out some of the happenings at Angel Acres by reading below...read on... Corie & Carter! From frantic phone call looking for help for a horse headed to certain death to Corie stepping up for a horse she didn't know for a rescue she'd only worked with once in the past. Volunteer Day at Angel Acres was really, really hot, but we still had fun - we had pizza from Papa John's and ice cream from Brusters both of Hanover - big thanks to these two great places! We finally got to meet some of our volunteers who help us remotely, in person! We got to chat and catch up...but sadly some of our most active volunteers were unable to attend due to other obligations...sssoooooo....you probably know where we are going with this...YEPPER!! Fall Volunteer Party is in the works!! BIG Thanks to Fran for getting all of the food and stuff together and helping make this event go off without a hitch and for her continued support and implementation of most of our crazy ideas and events!! Corie & Carter - Coincidence or Fate? You Decide :o)

This is a long story...so, I will make it brief!!

We got a call from one of the girls from the FLTAP about a horse in trouble at a local track. A super, sweet, kind, big gelding that needed out ASAP or would be headed to kill ...oddly enough...we had JUST received an email from Corie, she was looking for a big gelding to bring along and school.

Lil background :o) ...

Corie has been INCREDIBLY helpful to us with one horse in particular that was, well, not in the best circumstances and to make a long story short - she stepped up to the plate for a horse on our behalf, behind the scenes and made a nice happy ending for him!!

Anyhoo...Corie sends email, I am like...wow, I don't have anyone like that...well, it couldn't have been an hour later that I receive the call from FLTAP and it was like Priscilla (FLTAP contact) had read Corie's letter and made him special order for her!!

So, I call Corie; she agrees to make the drive to check him out, I told her, he might be what you are looking for and maybe not, I didn't want to waste her time. She told us that we were not wasting her time and if he wasn't for her she would happily foster him for us until we had room. How totally awesome of her...btw...his barn name is Carter.

Well...as you can see from picture...he is doing well with Corie...she is fostering him for 3 months and then will decide whether or not to become an Angel Acres Foster Failure - we sure hope she does!!!

If not, she will have donated her time, energy and his expenses to Angel Acres and this sweet boy and we will then find him a fabulous home.

17 Thoroughbreds STILL need Help they are FREE to good Home!

PLEASE HELP AND FWD TO ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED!

THESE HORSES ARE FREE TO GOOD HOME!

There are currently 17 TBs in need of a home. The owner has been trying for months to sell and give away these horses and is frustrated. He needs to vacate the facility he is at, and his hands are tied.

If you can make a solid commitment and offer a real home, please call him ASAP. Donald Jones at 845-591-7697. Horses are in Westtown, Orange County, NY and will need to be trailered. Right now they are FREE and clean of infectious diseases - they probably won't be if they end up at auction - and then there will be fees to get them out.

The owner has 10 days to completely move out - he will not send them to auction if people will speak for them and come get them! (I don't think he has a trailer or TIME to trailer them all over).

The horses are scheduled to go to auction tomorrow (June 2nd) between 6-7am. - of the 17, 6 are mares with foals by their sides and 5 straight mares.


We (Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue) were contacted last night as well and we are full (no one scheduled to leave for a couple of weeks & we cant put clean horses at a qt farm) so we are helping to spread the word MINUS the Sharon Crumb info, she is not a legitimate rescue in my opinion and I stay far, far away from her...but I do want to help get this gentleman's horses placed...so here is the remaining list...

Here's a list of the mares and foals ( 2 unbred mares are spoken for but we are unsure which ones right now.)

Peaceful Dawn 2002 - 5/10 colt didn't know if he had papers or not, but registerable colt.

1990 Andover Ally - colt 5/16 papers misplaced, foals are registerable

2001 Celestial Touch - 4/8 colt yes papers

2005 Midnight Service - 4/20 filly yes papers

2003 Star Valley - 5/1 filly yes papers

2002 TC Blue Eyes - 5/20 colt - papers not readily available

1990 Seattle Slew Mare, bred, but not checked - papers

1991 Looney Moon - lost her colt, she's open yes papers

1990 Slew five Oh - not reproductively sound - papers

Elegant Angel - sound, cribber, only one of the bunch 1999. Potential for riding horse. Uncomplicated. 16H Big boned, nice mare. Papers might be at racing office, but not in his possession. Foals are registerable.

3 mares with hind end issues - 1991 Janitrix, 1996 Noble Satin Doll, 1992 (didn't get the name, cell dropped the call). He said they are not riding candidates - companion only or broodmares. One is a stakes producer, one has an incredible family. Cannot be field kept, will need TLC. No papers in hand at this time, but all foals can be registered.

Best way to find out all the information on horses is to CALL DONALD - he knows better than us about UTD shots, Coggins, worming, dental, vices, etc of specific horses! If you want to speak for one or more, again, CALL DONALD - he actually knows which of the horses are still available!

Bowling for Bandito Event Was FANTASTIC!

Well, where to begin?! Let me start by saying THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this event a huge success!!!

We were worried about getting at least 10 teams to bowl for Bandito, otherwise we would have had to cancel the fundraiser...

Fast forward to 2:10pm yesterday (I am late for my own event, I know, I know, but it was foggy and a horse needed a quick cleanup before I left and then had to shower etc lol) event was from 2 to 4...I call Fran and say...yep, on our way be there in 10 mins etc...Fran says, "Good, Cause the entire bowling alley is full and lanes 1 - 31 are for Angel Acres."...all calm and stuff..."See you when you get here"...I am like...she is kidding, right?! Well, I walk-in and was SHOCKED to see the entire bowling alley full and all those lanes WERE for Bandito!!!

We have GOT to be the luckiest rescue around...such great volunteers, great people, great friends...we had a blast, raised funds for Bandito (no idea how much yet will post later) and raised awareness about the need for horse rescue, all while having a great time!

Special thanks to Fran, for her unending support of our rescue (she was presented with a special award from the Velvet-Nosed Gang for her hard work for them - will get her to send me a picture) and WLIF for sending along the LITE Prize Van to the event!!

And Thank You to Stephanie for making an ADORABLE cake for my 40th birthday with Bandito's adorable picture on the front!

And thanks to all of our readers, volunteers, helpers, and those sending thoughts and prayers to Bandito...he's still got a long way to go, but we think he will pull through!

An Entire Bowling Alley Full of people helping Bandito....PRICELESS :o)

Sadly, Prince Loses His Battle

It is with a very, very heavy heart that I write this tonight...we lost Prince at about 8pm this evening. I went to check on him at 5pm and he was down in the stall, breathing rapidly and could not get up. His legs had been shaking earlier in the day and he was really unsteady.

He had trailered in from Philly and we had no idea how thin and weak he was...we were all shocked when he got off the trailer. We also found out that he was in liver failure (we are awaiting a call back from the agency that first got the call about him to determine if they pulled blood or not) and probably endstage kidney failure. My vet said he was suprised he had survived this long and we all agreed he was the most emaciated horse any of us has ever seen.

He had been starved a very, very long time and his body just gave out. I want to thank Clare who sent out the troops for us immediately...Ben arrived to help try to get him up, then Clare showed up with Mike...Clare closed her store to be with us...and then my husband came home to me in the barn in tears...then our vet who was on the way from my first call arrived.

I want to tell everyone reading this that these 5 people treated this horse with more kindness, respect and love in his last hours than he probably saw in the last several years. Ben and Mike and Greg made sure he was laying on a mat and Ben made sure that a towel and soft flannel jacket was under his head at all times...he was with us only a very, very short time...we tried to fill his last days with lots of love and kindness...we are all better people for having had the chance to hold him, just for a little while.

I am too upset to write anymore this evening...thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers for Prince...my husband has lovingly covered him with a warm blanket and he will be taken care of in the morning.

Time For Some Happy News! Remember Raneem?

I just received this from Irene (ok I got it on Saturday night...lol... but I am WAY behind on emails due to Bandito and Prince) and I wanted to share with you...we really needed some happy news and here it is! She adopted Raneem, a pasture buddy for her guy, Regent just about 2 years ago....

"In the light of what you just sent out (she is referring to newsletter with Bandito) I wanted to send you this picture as a reminder of the good work you do. I've been meaning to
send this since the storms, but Raneem (and Regent) fared very well.

He is doing well, his front leg is holding up but we have noticed some
more stiffening in it. Nothing that prohibits him from cantering
around and bucking like a yearling.

He has been a great buddy and a sweet sweet horse. Keep up the good
work and although I'm disgusted by the death of the one horse I'm so
grateful bandito found his way to you just in time.

The Thoroughbred: Your Next Sport Horse!

Ahhhh....my reply to the most recent Angel Acres email....

Angel Acres believes wholeheartedly that rescue horses CAN have a fantastic second career!

Not all rescue horses are crippled and old with one hoof on a banana peel!

We, Angel Acres, rescue horses that are sound, sane and healthy with tons of potential, and most are pulled from the kill pen. We are working hard to dispel the currently, more often than not, believed myth that "there must be something wrong if he/she was in the kill pen"...usually the reason is they are not fast enough to earn their keep in the racing world.

Take a look at Preston, Tango (shown at left), Cuddles...all were in a heap of trouble i.e. kill pen or on the way there without swift intervention...all sane, sound and extremely ridable! Preston is a 1st level dressage horse, Tango is simply gorgeous and amazing!

Check out Markie on this blog...pulled from the kill pen for $325 now a $30,000+ show horse (with a fantastically wonderful family who loves her to pieces) on the A-Circuit in New Jersey...I could show you example after example.

We (as many of you know) concentrate on OTTB's and we feel that the majority of them can go onto wonderful, fantastic second careers!

Update on 5 Horses - Fantastic!

The horses listed in this post were pulled from the kill pen by Angel Acres and were rehomed by Royce's Rescue.

Royce's Rescue wanted to help some horses (they were already helping other animals) but didn't have quarantine facilities available...ssssoooo...they called us, and together we decided they could help save a horse by taking some of (one at a time) our guys who had already been through the Angel Acres program and were ready for adoption, allowing us to pull more while helping them get new homes!

I thought you might be interested in hearing about some of the horses we have gotten from you and the success they are having.

Vena is pretty much retired living the good life here with us.

Dee is living with her owner on a farm where she is doing theraupudic riding for handycap children!

Mocha's owner is a guy who is just crazy about him and his outgoing personality, still here with us. We call Mocha the barn greeter because he shakes his head at everyone that comes near him as if to say hello.

Ledger who was left to starve (Angel Acres saved him from going to NH after being left to starve in a field, after winning over $200,000 for his owner! His is one of our most popular happy ending stories) is fat and healthy and a wonderful horse for his middle age owner who continues to lesson and learn on him also still here.

And then there's Sissy. Sissy has taken her 54 year old owner to championship in our Associated Horse Show circuit. She is a wonderful horse and very talented and they too are still here with us. It's amazing what life these horses still have after being disguarded.

Royce's Rescue is doing well. Very busy as you well know. Hope all is well with you. Linda

Urgent Home Needed For Older Appy Gelding!

This just in from one of our humane officer friends in MD...Please cross post far and wide!

Help is needed for a 20 + year old Appaloosa gelding he is located in Frederick County, Md in the Rocky Ridge Area.

He is in an extremely neglectful home and is desperate need of re-homing. Owner is cooperative and is will to sign to horse over. He is in good body, but needs severe hoof care. He must go to a home that understands he is just a field ornament/pasture pal.

Grass and hay is all that he needs… he is on some grain thanks to the neighbor but he doesn’t need it. He is a bit hard to catch but once caught he is a good boy. If you can help this sweet guy...

Stormie - Adopted last weekend by Tokens Mom, Nikki!

Stormie was another TB mare in danger...she is by a fabulous sire and just needed a chance at life...not making it on the track, she ended up at New Holland...fast foward... a few calls and a place to go (thank you Clare!), and she was safe!

Now residing with her equine buddies in Erie, PA and new Mom, Nikki, she is settling in well. This photo does not do her justice...she is a gorgeous mare...we will update with new photos soon!

Pilot...20 year old TB finds forever home!!!

Pilot and Jo leaving for home...Pilot was bought at auction a few years ago...turned into a lesson horse...then was going to be headed back to auction because he was no longer needed in the riding program. They said they didn't really want to send him to the sale, so they contacted a friend of ours, who tracked us down (not very hard to do lol) and we bought him from them.

Pilot is an outstanding, wonderful guy and Jo was looking for a horse to help out/rescue and for someone calm and wonderful to ride...she had received our email about helping out Cloud and Belle...and since Cloud had a home (thank you Amy) we suggested she consider Pilot.

And the rest...as they say...is history! Big thanks to Jo for giving this guy a wonderful, loving home!!!

WOW!! Boo Boo Baby's Update! STUNNING....

This is the most recent photo of Boo Boo Baby...we get lots of emails asking how he is doing...many of you remember his horrific injury he arrived with...

He is doing FANTASTICALLY well and his new family loves him! Will post more tomorrow...these were taken today...

Big thanks to Joe and his family for giving this big (17.1 hh) guy a second chance at life...and what a great life he has now!!

New Horse In - Day 1 of Fair Over!

Today was a good day at the Fair...for those of us inside! YIKES!!!

It was POURING rain and things were soaked, I don't think anyone was dry! The horse show went on just outside the Exhibition Hall where we have our booth (be sure to stop by if you are in the area!)

Another hot, muggy, Angel Acres Day!

HOT HOT HOT...and I aint singing! LOL!

IT WAS REALLY HOT AND NASTY HUMID TODAY!

Gave Cee Cee and Ms. Thing a bath and WOW they stayed clean an entire 8 minutes!! I was not amused! LOL!

Mattie's Cards will be coming in soon...the fair is fast approaching and we are working to get ready for it as fast as we can. We hope to see lots of visitors at the fair...we will post more info soon!
