Pro Slaughter Letter To Us

blog

Pro Slaughter Letter To Us

E-mailPrintPDF

This is an enquiry e-mail via http://www.stopslaughteringus.com/ from:
Greg < Greg@DreamsToReality.com>

A couple of things....
1) When you are you initiating your campaign against slaughtering cows?
2) Are you aware that because the US banes slaughtering horses here they are shipped thousands of miles (very stressful) and then slaughter under conditions the US has NO CONTROL OF.... Quite an unintended consequence of that Law by WELL MEANING people
3) Rescues can't take all the available horses because a lot of the horses that would have gone to slaughter aren't going and this has put rescues up to capacity...
4) More regular horses are suffering today as a result of the no slaughter law in the US BECAUSE their owners can't afford to keep them and can't sell them with so many free and cheap horses on the markets.. They are choosing to feed their human families and there is nothing left over to feed their horsey families... Malnutrition and Neglect is the result...

I found it hypocritical of animal activists who threw paint on fur coats BUT wore leather shoes JUST LIKE I find it hypocritical to campaign against HUMANE slaughtering of unwanted horses in the US while wearing leather shoes from Ssaughtered cows....

You may want to re-consider your position as I feel you are the cause of many many many more animals suffering now, than ever did before, when we had slaughtering here in the US... The ones going to slaughter in Canada and Mexico (transit and in their non US controlled houses) AND those left behind with owners who can't give them to rescues and can't give them away to anyone and can't afford to feed them...

I am a horse lover and own six well fed and cared for and loved horses....

Greg Phillips

MY REPLY EXACTLY AS I SENT IT TO HIM:

Hi Greg,

1) I rescue horses NOT cows.
2) You are INCORRECT - horse slaughter is NOT banned (check your spelling) in the United States it is illegal only in TX, IL and CA.
3) The population of homeless horses in the USA is LESS than 1% of the total US horse population. There are also more horses in the USA now than there was 100 years ago.
How about making breeders breed more responsibly? WHY should rescues have to take in every horse simply because the owner / breeder decides to toss him or her away like yesterdays newsletter? Rescues need to rescue, not be the dumping ground for over breeders...
4) Back again to your incorrect information - horses CAN be slaughtered in the USA - there are currently 8 states with applications pending in the USA in different states to reopen horse slaughter plants.
5) There is NO such thing as humane horse slaughter.
6) I didn't throw paint on anyone, nor do I work with any groups that do, nor do I wear leather shoes.
7) How dare you call me the cause of horses being brutally transported and suffering at the hands of money grubbing horse killers.
YOU SIR, need to get the facts CORRECT before you send me an email accusing me of things that I have never done with your incorrect and error ridden email.
Tell me, Greg, what will you do when your 6 well loved horses time has come? Will you send them to slaughter?
Why attack someone like me who is working hard on behalf of the horses?
Have a fabulous day,
Jo :o)

Fees For Adoption Horses - Dispelling the Rescue Horse Myth!

I answered a note on a friends wall post and thought I would post it here as I believe it is probably a question that is asked often - why are adoption fees what they are for horses? The person asking was why some rescues "wanted and arm and a leg" for a horse and the rescues "wanted as much as 2000 (sic) for them"...sigh...this is a really disheartening question for folks like me that work daily to dispell the "Rescue Horse Myth" - which basically is - if he or she is a rescue, must be something wrong - SO SO SO not the case in many, many, many instances.

Be sure to read
this blog post about what it REALLY costs to rescue a horse, properly, from auction or kill pen. Below is my reply to her question/post:

Our fees run anywhere from $1200 to $3500 depending on the horse and our fees associated with the horse. These fees are for horses that, if we were private sellers and offering NONE of the guarantees our rescue offers each of our adopters, would be 3x higher.

Our horses are up to date, shots, feet, teeth, coggins, deworming, etc all are professionally schooled and are usually started over fences and/or doing dressage, eventing, field hunting etc. Minimum 90 days training after qt and ground work.

We put A LOT of time, money, effort and energy into our horses and our program and the fees from the adoption of a $3500 horse will allow us to go pull several more from the kill pen and start their entry into the Angel Acres program.

We also guarantee all of our horses to be exactly as described, you won't get a sick or unridable (unless we are adopting out a companion only horse or something) horse from us. We also have the $1 program for repeat adopters.

MANY good rescues have higher adoption fees, we must, in order to administer our programs. We are NOT federally funded and we (horse rescues in general) are usually the least funded of the companion animal groups.

Check out grants for horses and then check dog grants, there are, on average 25 dog grants available for each single horse grant available! YET, our fees are 10x per animal what it takes to care for a dog. And people do not just donate to us...funds are tight everywhere...sadly...

We also don't work with brokers and just give the horse to anyone who opens their pocket books and makes a donation. I speak to each prospective adopter, I screen all applicants thoroughly and I do the absolute very best to make sure the match between horse and adopter are fantastic!

When rescues are pulling horses from lots and seeing them for 10 mins before giving them to someone because they wrote a check, well there cannot be whole lot evaluation of the horse or the adopter going on.

So, please give rescues who charge larger fees a chance...you will be glad you did! Check out
fuglyblog.com to see a list of great rescues with horses available for adoption!

Mojito Gets His Tooties Done - WOW - What A Day!

When Mojito came in to Angel Acres we had been told that his feet had "been done"...well, that meant that the gentleman that he got dumped off on, felt so bad for him (hence the reason we got the call in the first place & he wasn't shot) that he removed the shoes that were on his feet. He didn't even know he had shoes on when he was dropped off because the foot had completely overgrown them!

Look at that sweet, adorable face nuzzling Mr. Chuck...and yes...he REALLY, TRULY is as kind as he looks...

Mojito, an 18 year old Thoroughbred who ponied at the track for at LEAST 10 years, arrived at Angel Acres with his feet in beyond deplorable condition (think platapus/dinner plate feet), his coat was sticky and he had sores down his back and looked dehydrated, to say the VERY least he was in rough shape. Not the shape you'd expect for a horse that worked his WHOLE LIFE for his owner - he was going to be shot or shipped direct to slaughter if we had not been able to intervene and rescue him.

Hhhmmmm....seems Mojito was able to snooker Mr. Greg into getting just - a - little - closer - to the hay pile!!! LOL!!

Today, has been just over 2 weeks since his arrival and he has gained just a bit of weight - we had absolutely no idea what he had been eating, but we knew it wasn't much as he was painfully thin - so we started him on a refeeding program. His skin is DRAMATICALLY better and his coat is looking much better too - the dullness is slowly being replaced by a shiny, new coat.

Mojito's first shoeing was successful - but it took A LOT of work on Chucks part - this horse's feet have been neglected and poorly managed for so long it will take another round of work before we see any dramatic improvement. Chucks best guess of last real foot care? YEARS...sigh...

The right foot in the above photo is done and is padded with soft latex and gives him lift and support - more will be posted about the progress of his feet on his page this coming week.
Mojito after his tooties were done and he was able to finally walk without tripping and stumbling!!

BTW - Many of you remember Chuck, he was the amazingly, wonderful blacksmith that saved Mattie's life back in January of 2007. With Chucks expert care and help, Mojito should be able to live a full and happy life and we feel strongly he will be someone's pride and joy!

Where has the time gone?! YIKES!!

WOW! Can you believe the year is more than half over?! Soon the kids will be back in school, and Fall will be here!!

We have oodles of stuff going on and tons of updates we want to do...unfortunately getting ready for the fair and working on the jewelry store has consumed much of our time, in addition to losing power during storms over the past 2 weeks.

The rescue will be closed from August 18, 2010 thru September 12, 2010 to allow time to get ready for the fair, to attend the fair and then to recover from the fair!! LOL!!!

BIG thanks to the folks (Clare and Deb) at Designs By Clare for all of their gorgeous, handmade jewelry (more will be added tomorrow - we are delayed due to the storms) that's available now in our online store - Angel Acres Shopping For A Cause - and thanks to Hannah, Lauren and Johanna for getting earrings and other jewelry ready...thanks to Fran for getting other fair stuff ready!

Be sure to stop by The Maryland State Fair from August 27, 2010 thru September 6, 2010 we will be in the Exhibition Hall.

We hope to see you guys soon...and the newsletter will go out tomorrow, I promise :o)

Baby New Year Update - MY MY MY....sigh...

Well, we tried our very best to get Baby New Year loaded onto the trailer to get her to her new home...sadly, she would not get on the trailer. We do NOT believe in beating them on the trailer, we do believe in them loading via kindness, and professional ability and always thinking...yep, you are SO getting on that trailer! LOL! Alas, sometimes it doesn't always work.

However, even if we could have gotten her on the trailer (she is 20 years old and was at the same farm for 15 years before given away to be left to starve nearly to death - her story is here) the family (a WONDERFULLY KIND FAMILY) that was planning on adopting her could not have dealt with the trailer issue...they are an older couple, new to trailering and this is not a good combo.

If she were going there to just be trail ridden on the property or just hang out it would have been fabulous! She was not violent, wasn't mean, didn't buck or rear...just planted those tooties and there you go...

Sooooo...our thoughts are...do we REALLY want to try to teach her to load (which really isn't accurate she KNOWS how to load, she doesn't want to) and get her adopted...or do we just let her stay here and let her be a teaching horse for the younger volunteers, and a baby sitter for new horses? I think we are going with the latter...

BIG thanks to Pat for covering her hauling fee...even though she didn't load we still paid (two hours and oodles of Joe Renner's patience - priceless!) her hauling fee (I tried to refund it, I think she threatened me with bodily harm or something LOL!)...and for offering to help us with her issue...I think maybe, she HAS found her forever home at Angel Acres...

Who Doesn't Love Return Address Labels?!

What a SNAZZY lil title for this post...actually, it just popped into my head! LOL!

Angel Acres has received word that one of the fundraisers I have been wanting to do...since the very first year we started the rescue...is going to become a reality!! For over 6 years I have been wanting to try to do a return address label fundraiser. You've probably seen them...you get a a envelope in the mail (addressed to you or you and spouse etc) and open it up and there is your name & address on an adorable sticky label with a cute picture or cartoon and a note about the charity sending it to you. I LOVE THOSE...because it saves me from writing my addy on the envelopes I send out (I have carpal tunnel and anything that saves me holding a pen or pencil is fabulous!) for people and bills, etc.

Each one says...this is what we do...this is why we do it...would you like to donate...you don't have too...but hey, if you want to that'd be great. If not, well, we won't bother you again and that's that, keep the labels they are a gift.

I tried and tried and tried to get someone to help us do it...FOR YEARS...we kept hitting road blocks or something else would get in the way. So, I just put it on the back burner and thought...you know, maybe one day we will get to give it whirl. I had wanted to send out just one mailing a year (as I wouldn't want to harrass our donors and readers) and then have custom labels available on our website for a donation of any amount. Sadly...

I found out that a run, even at the printers cost, is several thousand dollars...which would mean that most of the funds raised would go to pay off the fundraiser costs and the rest would go to Mattie's Legacy Fund (which really needs more funding) and to Angel Acres General Fund (which we use to feed, house, etc the horses). This would be great to raise awareness about Angel Acres, Mattie's Fund, etc...but would it really be worth the time, effort and money...with NO guarantee we'd even raise a penny....a big risk we could not afford to take....

WEEELLLL....

FAST FOWARD: WE JUST FOUND OUT THAT WE HAVE BEEN AWARDED A RUN OF LABELS BY A VERY, VERY GENEROUS PRINTER IN MARYLAND!

You just KNOW the people responsible for this are going to be so sick of hearing me say thank you, thank you, thank you so much, gosh they will probably have to go into hiding! LOL! I can't give out details now...but wanted to prep the poor souls who will eventually have to change their number to get me to stop calling and thanking them...lol... for what they were in for :o)

Actually, I will control myself, say a thank you, post their links predominantly on our site...and will be sure to tell everyone I know how fabulously kind they were (there are several different people involved to make this happen for us and I will let you know soon who they are).

I AM THRILLED because this generous donation of time, skills, printing, envelope stuffing etc. will allow us to raise awareness about Angel Acres and why we rescue horses and EVERY penny raised will go towards Mattie's Legacy Fund and the Velvet-Noses we care for here at the rescue!

EVERY SINGLE PENNY RAISED - all because of the kindness of a few wonderful, caring people....PRICELESS :o)

Cup O' Cuddles On His Way Home!!

Cup O' Cuddles just left for his new home with new Mom, Jazmyn!! He was great...due to traffic Jazmyn and company arrived about an hour past sundown...light is limited in the loading area (area is smaller due to snow, mud and muck)...but...

Jazmyn put the lead rope on him, walked him to the trailer, he walked right on (in the dark/almost no light) and we put the butt bar up and that was that!

We are THRILLED for both Jazmyn and Cuddles...to the left is his picture whilst waiting on his new family to arrive...

Congrats to Jazmyn...we think this is a great match and together, they will go far!!

The REAL Cost of Rescuing A Horse....read on!

I get emails asking why our horses have adoption fees since, "they are just rescue horses"...I am going to do my best to explain it and for the record these only our (Angel Acres) estimated costs and are relevant to East Coast cost of goods, etc. And of course, our policies and procedures...here we ggooooo...these prices are averages and can be slightly higher or lower. THIS IS PART 1 - Part 2- Posts Tomorrow!

Cost to purchase horse from kill buyer - $350
Transport to quarantine farm - $50
Two months quarantine farm - $500 ($250 per month)
Transport to training facility - $275

Board at training facility - $300 - $100 per month (we are EXTREMELY grateful to our friend who allows us unlimited access to our horses and their indoor arena for this extremely low price...we supply hay, grain and treats)

Vet Care - Shots, Vet Check, Coggins, teeth, etc. - $250
Farrier - $20 (we get a discounted rate for our horses)
Dewormer - $20 for at least two rounds
Hay - $360 - $90 per month
Feed - $120 - $30 per month
Training - $700 - $350 per month for minimum two months flat work schooling

Care for ONE SINGLE HORSE is $2845 (this is the high end estimated cost - see tomorrow's blog for other details/horse info) for a horse in our care for 4 to 5 months.

We do NOT rely solely on adoption fees...we supplement with fundraisers (thank you Fran and friends), grant writing, and private donations. We do not get on forums and beg for money to pull horses from kill pens, we know how much money we have BEFORE we go to the sale. Donations made to us for the slaughter/rescue fund are tax deductible and you will get a receipt, a thank you card from me and you will know which horse you helped rescue and you will have access to updated information.

We do NOT bid against private buyers, trainers, families, etc...however if we are CERTAIN that the kill buyer is the one bidding, we will bid (will save us money).

We do NOT raise money and then give the horse away to anyone who pops up...we strive to ensure a solid, good match between horse and adopter. We stand behind each and every horse we adopt out. Every horse is vetted, trained and personally handled by me before he or she is made available for adoption.

We WILL give away a fully trained or ready to be finished horse if we need the spot for an emergency or under special circumstances. Everyone fills out an application and I have done checks on state troopers, a minister, a humane police officer, an actual relative of my husbands and on and on...doesn't matter who you are or who you know...we put the horses best interest, the adopters potential happiness and suitability first, always.

We don't play the "woe is me, feel sorry for us because we are a rescue" card...we know that everybody already knows how hard we work, how heartbreaking the days can be and that we rely on public support and adoption fees.

We work hard to raise awareness in a positive fashion, we refuse to use graphic photos or slaughter house videos to make our point. I do not take a salary (thank you Greg) yet work from sunup to WAY past sundown (but what other job makes the day FLY by?!) and only work with the best people and the best rescues possible.

I don't EVER take one minute of what I do for granted...I know that I am extremely lucky to be able to play, uh work, with horses every single day of my life...not many people are able to do that and if not for the fantastic support of my husband, children and special volunteers, we would not be where we are today.

We are also striving to change the perception of the rescued horse...they are (most of the time) sound, healthy, young and sane...NOT old, crippled or sick. Come back tomorrow to learn more!

Angel Acres - Why Our Horses Aren't Free (Usually)

Well...since I am on a roll with yesterday's post...I figured I would go ahead and lay it all out there LOL!! Most of our emails are pleasant...but we get several a week that make me crazy!

This will be the first in several examples of emails I receive - tomorrow - the full list of what we pay to get a horse from kill pen to adoptive home! Same time, same channel!

Occasionally I get emails like this:

Prospective Adopter: "Hi, I would like to adopt horse, and I'd like it (ooohhhh LOVE that reference - actually it makes me cringe as they are not "its" to us...we refer to them as boys and girls, mares, geldings, him and her etc)...to walk, trot, canter and I do like to trail ride. What does it cost to adopt a horse?"

My reply: Hi...etc...we have so and so available, he's a very nice guy, sound, no bad habits (and I give a brief description)...adoption fee is $2400. Thank you for writing...etc"

Prospective Adopter: "WHAT?!?!" (all indigent like) I thought you were a rescue!!! Why would I have to pay for it? I am doing you a favor by taking it (notice in my initial response email how I referred to our available horses and this one in particular as "he") off your hands. I'd give it (cringe) a good home, but I ain't paying nothing for it." (yes, really those exact words)

My reply: "Really? I pulled him out of the kill pen, paid quarantine board (didn't just say I did and charged for it) for 2 months (yep two months we take no chances), paid the kill buyer for him, paid for transport, fed him, hayed him, gave him his shots, did his feet, dewormed him several times, did his teeth, paid for transport from quarantine to our training farm, had him trained for (at least) 60 days on the flat, etc., started him over fences AND I will guarantee him....and anytime after 30 days if you would like another horse, you are free to adopt almost anyone for $1, all with the same stuff as your first horse. Please tell me how "taking him off of my hands" is doing us a favor?"

Prospective Adopters...sometimes they understand, sometimes we never hear back, sometimes they like our program and decide to adopt and then...there are other times they will say they are going to get a horse from the auction...GOOD LUCK!! I have been doing this a long time and STILL am not sure of what I am doing 100% of the time. Also, do they have a quarantine farm? As lord only knows whats (illness such as strangles, or how about the lovely EHV-1 neurological form, etc) going through the auction on any given week!

How about a friend to bail them out (hugs to you Bev) when they have done an "oooppsss a daisy - too much horse for our adopters" rescue horse...

Tomorrow's blog...the ENTIRE LIST of costs to pull a horse and get him to, say the point of Tango or Preston...yikes!!!

Update on 5 Horses - Fantastic!

The horses listed in this post were pulled from the kill pen by Angel Acres and were rehomed by Royce's Rescue.

Royce's Rescue wanted to help some horses (they were already helping other animals) but didn't have quarantine facilities available...ssssoooo...they called us, and together we decided they could help save a horse by taking some of (one at a time) our guys who had already been through the Angel Acres program and were ready for adoption, allowing us to pull more while helping them get new homes!

FROM LINDA:

Hi Jo,
I thought you might be interested in hearing about some of the horses we have gotten from you and the success they are having.

Vena is pretty much retired living the good life here with us.

Dee is living with her owner on a farm where she is doing theraupudic riding for handycap children!

Mocha's owner is a guy who is just crazy about him and his outgoing personality, still here with us. We call Mocha the barn greeter because he shakes his head at everyone that comes near him as if to say hello.

Ledger who was left to starve (Angel Acres saved him from going to NH after being left to starve in a field, after winning over $200,000 for his owner! His is one of our most popular happy ending stories) is fat and healthy and a wonderful horse for his middle age owner who continues to lesson and learn on him also still here.

And then there's Sissy. Sissy has taken her 54 year old owner to championship in our Associated Horse Show circuit. She is a wonderful horse and very talented and they too are still here with us. It's amazing what life these horses still have after being disguarded.

Royce's Rescue is doing well. Very busy as you well know. Hope all is well with you. Linda

FANTASTIC...THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE LINDA!

Stormie - Adopted last weekend by Tokens Mom, Nikki!

Stormie was another TB mare in danger...she is by a fabulous sire and just needed a chance at life...not making it on the track, she ended up at New Holland...fast foward... a few calls and a place to go (thank you Clare!), and she was safe!

Now residing with her equine buddies in Erie, PA and new Mom, Nikki, she is settling in well. This photo does not do her justice...she is a gorgeous mare...we will update with new photos soon!

Big thanks to Nikki and her family for being an Angel Acres repeat adopter...

Pilot...20 year old TB finds forever home!!!

Pilot and Jo leaving for home...Pilot was bought at auction a few years ago...turned into a lesson horse...then was going to be headed back to auction because he was no longer needed in the riding program. They said they didn't really want to send him to the sale, so they contacted a friend of ours, who tracked us down (not very hard to do lol) and we bought him from them.

Pilot is an outstanding, wonderful guy and Jo was looking for a horse to help out/rescue and for someone calm and wonderful to ride...she had received our email about helping out Cloud and Belle...and since Cloud had a home (thank you Amy) we suggested she consider Pilot.

And the rest...as they say...is history! Big thanks to Jo for giving this guy a wonderful, loving home!!!

Angel Acres Halloween Updates
Greetings!

It's been a busy month for the Angel Acres volunteers! Mattie's Legacy Fund continues to assist horse owners in need of help due to financial or other hardships. Due to the fabulous support we have received for Mattie's Fund, 32 horses are safe and will not be headed to auction!

We will be posting their stories on Matties Blog as soon as possible...working to save lives leaves little time to blog about doing it!

We want to thank Fran Burns and Dustin's Dreamer for their wonderful support of the Angel Acres Gang & Mattie's Legacy Fund! For every blue ribbon won, Fran donates $10 to our rescue fund...well, Dreamer was winning like crazy and we were able to save Lucky Day from a very unlucky fate, as a direct result of Fran and Dreamer.

Fran goes way above and beyond the call of duty for Angel Acres every single day...big hugs from the entire Velvet-Nosed Gang & us non-velvet noses too!
