Mattie's Legacy Fund Assists More Horses In Need

This is Socks - a pony mare rescued by Jody and her family - she was starved and so weak she could not walk for water and hay. Jody had to take water and food to her.

AND she was pregnant & severely foundered at the time of rescue...the farrier believes with proper care & maintenance she will be able to remain comfortable and live a long life.

1st picture is at the time of her rescue and the one below is after being rescued and living with her rescuer, Jody. We are assisting Jody and Socks with farrier care via Mattie's Legacy Fund. We have helped many, many families in need of assistance via Mattie's Fund.

It is because of our supporters that we are able to provide help to Jody, who says this about Socks, "She is a very good pony and I just want to give her the life she deserves. I just need the help to get her through this pregnancy and give her a loving place to the rest of her life."

And It Just Gets Worse - Sigh - 2 Geldings Update...

This morning the farrier and vet went out to the location of the two geldings we had moved from Minnesota to Michigan. Click HERE for original blog post.

Farrier says to foster dad (foster mom was at work), "this horse is hot, I don't know if he'll make it." (excerpt from longer conversation) Foster Dad IMMEDIATELY calls foster Mom, who immediately calls me...explains what's going on and I say, "ok, tell me how much experience your farrier has with horses," - she says, "he's not an alarmist and also trains" I say, "call the vet."

At the rescue we do not call the vet for stuff we can handle, low grade fever, minor injuries , gassy bellies, stone bruise, etc - we do call for ANY eye injuries, give banamine & and start walking and colicy horses and the vet is notified asap in case things go to hell in a hand basket. We have never lost a colicy horse we could keep walking and have only had 2 emergency colics in 8 years (successfully treated).

Since this foster family is taking care of stuff they never signed up for (remember they were supposed to be in "great shape" see previous blog ) I felt it best to have the vet out asap for an emergency / urgent visit since I wasn't there to assess the horses situation. Vet gave meds
& left detailed instructions for foster family and vet does believe he will survive, thank goodness!

Pictures have been sent from foster mom and I will be posting them later this weeked (they aren't too graphic but show the severe extent of the neglect these horses have endured) as this blog is replacing todays planned blog.

We Don't Like To Complain, But Can We At Least Get The Truth When We Help You?!

We need help getting 2 geldings moved into the main facility or into a permanent home - they were assisted over the weekend via Mattie's Fund. These geldings were NOT supposed to be in the deplorable condition in which they arrived. We were told they were in "great shape" and "you'll have no problem placing them"...um, yeah...once again, I am astounded by one persons view of what is "great shape" and what is not...as of right now, we will require a front and profile photo of any horse being assisted by Mattie's Legacy Fund - so this doesn't happen again.

Covered in rain rot, being extremely wormy, having last years burrs in your mane & tail, feet WAY overdone is NOT being in good shape. Oh, I forgot the sticky nastiness the foster mom is cleaning from their bellies. To say I am unhappy is an understatement. We now are looking at extra bills - for shots, feet, coggins, health cert, etc. these things would NOT be an issue had we been prepared for (we could have been prepared had we known the truth) them.

We are helping, on average 15 to 20 horses EACH month...this will now take away our ability to help other horses this month...so, as much as I don't want to do it, I am posting a chipin to ask for assistance. We WILL assist these 2 geldings and make sure they get the care they need, the new loving home they deserve and are utd on everything, no matter what - but it will greatly affect our ability to help any more horses this month...sigh...

MLF helps keep horses safe in their homes by providing assistance to families going through a financial, health, or other crisis.
