Update on Chief, Bella & Cherokee from Liz!

Hi Jo,

I am sending you a link to my website pictures that show Chief, Bella (two Angel Acres horses) and Cherokee(stuffed horse) getting to know each other.




Chief was the only one to canter out to greet the new pony. Bella then followed along while the rest of the scaredy cats went running the other way. You will see in the pictures that they all finally came to meet her but only Chief and Bella actually sniffed her and thought of her as a real pony. Bella actually went to her back end and lifted her up with her nose and she fell! and my cute little bella then started grooming her!! next time I have to take the video camera out. It was so cute.

Cherokee is a stuffed pony we use for kids......

Chief is doing well and I LOVE HIM!!!

Garcon D'or Goes To Foster Training Home!

Garcon D'or aka Gee went off to his foster moms home today! Fran, who has Dustin's Dreamer, wanted to help out even more with the rescue gang and decided to take Gee to her place and school him on the flat and basically work with him for the next couple of months.

Gee is EXCEPTIONALLY kind, pleasant, quiet, well-behaved and is a fantastic mover on top of all that! He has no issues, no vices, no bad habits...just a good boy who will make someone a very happy horse owner...really soon!

This is Gee waiting for the trailer to be ready to hop on...as you can see his is very anxious...NOT! LOL! Notice Pippin, our barn managers dog, just a foot away from Gee. He is SUCH a good boy!

He has some superficial bites on his back and hiney and is really low in the pecking order...we hope he finds his forever home soon after his training...he really deserves it!

Lewisbury Youth Group!

Unfortunately, my camera battery died and I was not able to get pictures of todays volunteer group! They braved the stifling, awful heat and were here bright and early!

They were fabulous!! They cleaned out Ole Blue (our storage van) and took down some seriously mean wasp nests as well getting her all organized and spiffy! Blue tends to get cluttered pretty quickly...she may not be on the road, but Blue sure earns her keep! LOL! Will post some pics tomorrow.

They mucked stalls for us, (THANK YOU!) they scrubbed water tubs, fed the sheep, goat and pot bellies. They also helped decorate a ton of shoes for our upcoming fundraiser!

Happy Update on Token & Red!

They both look absolutely beautiful and are doing great! Big thanks to to Nikki and her family for giving these two wonderful boys a happy, loving home!

What a great foster Mom, Kit-Ten is...

This is Ms. Fancy Pants aka Kit-Ten...

This is a litter of kittens that I found in the ceiling of the big barn at Angel Acres...I nursed them from about 2 weeks of birth until thye were weened...sadly 3 of them did not survive, but the 4 that did were quickly foster mommed by Kit-Ten has never had a litter and was not producing milk, but started taking care of them about the second week (4 weeks of age) with grooming, cleaning, playing and cuddling...etc...what a good kitty!!!

Now we need to keep up this bill’s momentum and get it out of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and up for a vote. The Senate will likely be a much tougher vote for this bill so please start asking your senators now to vote yes on the ROAM act (click here to contact your senators). The Cloud Foundation had meetings with the BLM, the Forest Service, and Montana Representatives earlier this month and we have legally appealed the BLM’s recent Herd Management Area Plan on the grounds that it does not allow for a self-sustaining, genetically viable herd. We have also appealed the Forest Service’s decision to rebuild the fence across the top of the Pryors to keep horses from accessing their historical and currently used rangelands in the Custer National Forest. The BLM just released their Preliminary Environmental Assessment for a roundup in the Pryors and you can read it here. The BLM proposes rounding up and removing 70 HORSES plus some foals. Comments should be mailed by August 17th to: Billings BLM Field Office, 5001 Southgate Drive, Billings, MT 59101 Polaris and her 2009 filly "Jet" and Bachelors spar in the Forest Service Lands The Cloud Foundation could support a limited removal of up to 20 one and two-year old horses but we must not allow BLM to bring this herd down the such low numbers and destroy their unique Spanish genetics. Nearly all mares returned to the range would be given a 22-month contraceptive drug, which is still being tested in the wild. This would gut the herd, leaving fewer than ten reproducing mares in the coming year. I have recorded a new Youtube piece- click here to view. Rain and Greg!

Well, seems that the rain seems to be following Greg!

Greg has been working all weekend for the rescue and every time he gets into a project, the weather seems to say...nope, buddy boy, dont think so...lol...and then it rains!

But...he got the driveway regraded, the entire property mowed, the big fields cut, and of course the obligatory electric cord repair...he is forever cutting it with some sort of equipment!

Matties Legacy Fund Helps TB Mare!

Our first horse helped by the Mattie's Legacy Fund is a thorougbred mare originally saved by Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue and then rehomed through Angel Acres.

Mid Atlantic and Angel Acres work closely together to help as many horses in need as possible. This lovely mare was adopted out in 2004 and now, due to financial reasons, the sweet girl needs to be rehomed. Knowing our policy of always taking back our horses, the family called us and told us the situation. We were able to send the family money to cover her cost for 2 months while we find her a forever home...we could not do this without the help we have received from our readers and supporters from all over the country.

Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue Receives TCA Grant

Glenville, Pa.-Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue (www.saveahorsenow.org) is pleased to announce that they are the recipient of a grant from the Thoroughbred Charities of America. In the past 19 years TCA has granted more than $16 million to over 200 organizations in 38 states. TCA is the largest non profit organization in the thoroughbred industry.

"We are extremely honored to receive this grant from such a fabulous organization," said Jo Deibel, director and founder of Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue. She explained these funds will greatly assist in her efforts to care for and assist the Thoroughbreds available for adoption at Angel Acres. Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit rescue dedicated to saving horses bound for slaughter for human consumption. In addition, they also assist in cases of neglect and abuse. Thoroughbreds are rescued from kill pens and adopted into loving forever homes. All adoption applicants and horses up for adoption are screened thoroughly. TCA works year round to raise funds and awareness to assist groups in 5 different areas of Thoroughbred activities including Rescue and Retraining, Equine research, Therapeutic riding, Jockey and Backstretch programs and Education and Scholarship programs.

Long Hot Day at Angel Acres...yikes!

Today was long and hot...and just icky!!!

Sarah came out to volunteer today and groomed up some of the girls...woo hoo!!

The York County Development Group comes out tomorrow...and you know what that means...its HORSE SHOE TIME!!! We will be making the shoes we sell at the State Fair and in online store!

Lauren, our newest regular volunteer, will be out bright and early tomorrow to volunteer and will be grooming away!

Horses on the Hill

Spent all day yesterday on Capitol Hill for the Horses on the Hill event. We were in congressional offices and phones were ringing in support of the bill!

We sure hope that this is the year that the bill finally passes. Horse rescuers were in from all over the country from California to Delaware and many places inbetween!

Will post more details on the day tomorrow...had to deal with a colicy mare and some seriously tired tooties!

Jack is doing sooo good!! We finally started taking lessons again so we can learn to control our racehorse speed a little better haha. We also started jumping. The other day we jumped 2'9"!! A friend of mine took us to the local riding club and he made me pround. He didn't spook at the cars on the highway or the dogs barking or the wind or anything. He was such a good boy...

Please accept my apologies for no one responding to your question about AHPA's stance on horse slaughter, I can understand your concern. AHPA is not pro-slaughter.

I am having trouble understanding what you mean by the questionnaire allowing for slaughter as an end result for a rescued horse. There are two questions regarding slaughter, one is asking the percentage of horses that are adopted, sold, keep until their death, euthanized, or sent to slaughter, the second is asking if an organization knowingly sells their horses to slaughter buyers or their agents. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous people in this arena who do not have the horses' best interest at heart and AHPA would not recommend an organization who engages in this type of activity.

AHPA maintains these questionnaires on file so that we may provide more information for those people faced with adoption, rehabilitation, and rescue issues.

I hope that I may have cleared up questions or concerns that you have had with AHPA, the questionnaire and the equine rescue organization list. If you do not wish to be listed, please let me know.

MY RESPONSE:

Dear Diana,

Thank you for clarifying your groups stand on slaughter and thank you for writing back to me. The confusion started when I called and no one could give me a clear cut answer about your groups position.

As you stated in your email below, you ask how many of a rescue organizations horses are sent slaughter...that lends itself to being misinterpreted as being a viable option which your group supports since it is immediately preceded by other outcomes such as adopted, kept until their death, etc. I realize now that is not the case, but maybe in your literature you could preface the packet you mail out with a letter stating your stand on slaughter right from the beginning, thereby ending any confusion before it starts.

I have received no less than a dozen emails stating the same concerns from other rescues you contacted via your equine rescue list email, as they were copied on my original email to you.

Maybe you can send out a clarification to everyone you originally emailed to clear up the confusion...we certainly want all the help we can get, but don't want to take a chance of being perceived as being aligned with the pro slaughter side.

Since your stand is anti slaughter, we would be happy & grateful to be added on your list.
